So I'm a new user on College Confidential...although my mom has been stalking everyone on here for a couple of years now. I'm a senior in high school and have a couple auditions under my belt, so I'm starting to figure out exactly where I want to go. Two front-runners for me are American and Temple; both BA (yes, I know, the dreaded BA) and both somewhat close to where I live. I really want to double major in Psychology, and I know that these programs allow me to do that. I'm wondering if any of you have any information on the schools; I've visited both and liked both campuses. I realize there are some significant differences (camps type, tuition, school size), but what are the differences in the musical theatre programs? Any information will be helpful. Thanks so much! :)

I too have visited both campuses with my daughter, but am more familiar with Temple because I grew up in the area, have taken dance classes there and performed there, and know many former students and professors.

When we visited American, we sat in on a dance class. We did love the new performing arts building but if I recall correctly, there were differences in the offerings of the two schools. Temple has a BFA Dance major (as well as MFA and Ph.D) and with that, there are a multitude of dance classes, quite a bit more offerings than American. The same goes with music - just look at the course offerings and the plethora of concentrations at Temple. Now don’t get me wrong, American has a lot to offer in the performing arts field, but Temple seems to have much more, especially since they offer more degrees in the performing arts field. And Temple’s facilities are a plenty.

Now that being said, at Temple, the undergrads do compete with the grad students for parts. I saw their production of Oklahoma and I believe that a few grad students were cast.
