Temple University Musical Theatre Emphasis

Pardon the intrusion from the straight theater forum but there isn’t much info about Temple there so I thought I would ask here if anyone knows much about Temple’s straight acting program. Its one of the schools D is considering. Thanks!

LeftofPisa - Kids we know in the straight theater program love it there. They especially talk about the faculty and how they are professionals and really have the kids’s best interest in mind. I can’t post links, but go to Temple University website and search for bulletin theater - it is where you can find the theater curriculum and additional courses for each concentration. Good luck to your D in her decision!

Links to college websites and many other things are certainly allowed on CC. The links that are not allowed, if you read the Terms of Service, are to things like YouTube, other forums, blogs, personal websites, and social networking sites.

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to give some updates to this thread in terms of the musical theatre concentration at Temple University (now entering its fourth year of existence)
-Temple Theaters’ production of the musical SWEENEY TODD earned $32,556.00 at the box office in the fall semester of 2010.
-The first class of seniors to graduate with a concentration in musical theatre from Temple will graduate this May. The senior class is made up of ten students (seven girls, three guys). -The first student to EVER graduate with a concentration in musical theatre from Temple graduated this past December and is currently playing Maureen in a regional production of the musical RENT in Palm Springs, California.
-Musical theatre concentration students have been working/performing at a myriad of outside professional production in Philadelphia and the surrounding area during their time in school…these theaters include: The Arden, The Walnut Street Theatre, New Candlelight Theatre, The Media Theatre, and Mauckingbird Theatre Company.
-Several MT concentration students will be performing with professional theatre companies in Philadelphia this summer or with summer stock houses all over the country. These theaters include: Arrow Rock Lyceum, The Walnut Street Theatre, Gretna Theatre, Ocean City Theatre Company, Mazeppa Productions, Maples Repertory Theatre, and Sesame Place Theme Park.

Guests/Master Classes this year: Forrest McClendon (Broadway’s The Scottsboro Boys), Jeff Bowen (composer, [title of show] ), Michael Berresse (Tony-nominated actor, veteran of 11 Broadway shows).

iacboi - Thanks so much for the update! I see you started this thread back in 2008, so I am assuming you are going to be a Senior this Fall. We saw Sweeney Todd and found it to be very professionally done. We also saw the MT Concert last month and were impressed by the talent of the current students! D is very excited to attend next Fall! Can you give a typical day in the life of a Temple MT student? Also, for the production practicum requirement for each semester, what kinds of things do students do other than perform? How much time does it entail? And can students pick these, or are they assigned? Thx

whats the acceptance rate for the musical theater concentration at temple?

I may not be the best person to answer this but I believe my son said that there were fourteen new musical theatre students for this year (though only 4 were freshman). I think they were expecting well over 200 students to audition. I am not sure how many they actually saw or how many decided to go elsewhere. We were also told that they would not take more than 18 new students each year.

My son just started the program this year and is really enjoying it. He has had some exciting master classes and feels like he is learning a lot. He said the training, especially in acting is top notch. I just saw their production of Urinetown and was very impressed with the quality of the production and the level of talent of the students in the show.

I’m right this minute sitting in the theatre watching Dr. Rollo Dilworth conduct a workshop for my D’s children’s choir. He directs the Freshman Ensemble choir at Temple. If any students have the opportunity to study under Dr. Dilworth take advantage of it. He is absolutely AMAZING! And a lot of fun, too!

Congratulations are in order for Temple alum (2008) Da’Vine Joy Randolph who will be playing the role of ODA MAE BROWN in the Broadway production of the new musical GHOST–opening in March. Da’Vine attended Temple as a theatre major for her undergrad (moving on to Yale for her MFA right after leaving Temple) and was very active in the early stages of Temple’s musical theatre program…most notably portraying the role of THE WITCH in Temple’s production of INTO THE WOODS. Into the Woods was the last musical presented at Temple before the Musical Theatre Concentration went into affect in the Fall of 2008. Congrats, Da’Vine!

Anybody willing to offer information on Temple’s current musical theater program? Strengths, weaknesses, rigor of training? Thank you!

What is the music education like at Temple? Is there any music theory or music history, or is it essentially limited to private voice?

CanadianMTgirl, I assume you are asking about the music education in regards to the MT major. Music Theory/Sightsinging is a MT requirement and Voice lessons are given every semester.
Course of study can be found: [ACADEMICS : THEATER : SCT : TEMPLE UNIVERSITY](http://www.temple.edu/sct/theater/academics/ACADEMICSTHEATERSCTTEMPLEUNIVERSITY_001.htm)
It is possible to take more music classes through Boyer (the music school) as electives.
