Tensions With Parents Over College Choices, Feedback from Parents Please???

Pierre,

You are soon to be an adult and will soon be treated like one. Go where YOU want to go. Go where You think You fit, and You will get the best education you can. Don’t let Mom or Dad or Aunt Fanny order you where to go. In short, you decide what school you want, and you pay for it. Your choice, your dream, your bill. Do you wish for someone else to finance your dream? If you choose to let or dare I say- expect- someone else to pay your bill, then yes, they have a right to decide what they will or will not pay for.

I have no idea what my english grade is for the 4th quarter, half of my english grade for the 4th quarter consists of a 20 page thesis that I submitted last week and the rest are journal entries/short essay assignments that have not been due yet so I don’t think I have many grades for this quarter so far if any at all.

agree with mathmom and pugmadkate. It is difficult to send your kid to school, invest in the money,(esp now) and wonder how they will do. The D prob threw them, and they wonder about your judgement. Especially if it is from lack of effort and not an honest to goodness struggle. I think many parents are seeing this. If it is a change it makes you wonder .Did they see something at Clemson that makes them wonder, or is something in their financial situation they are not sharing?

Pierre - Clemson will be challenging as an Engineering major. They offer superb assistance/tutoring in the Cooper library so that students can get any extra help they need. A young lady from our church will be assisting freshmen engineering majors with Calculus next year as a student tutor. They are identified by the colored (by subject) vests they don when on duty to help those that want extra help.

A key factor in your success will be the maturity you exhibit to solicit that help to ensure your success. As a spouse of a Clemson alum and parent of an entering freshman I know the school will offer you superb opportunities. As do your parents, I have to trust that my son will be responsible enough to do what it takes to succeed, especially if I’m sending him 800 miles away and spending $32K per academic year. I wish you much success in your quest.

Ok, sounds like I will try the contract idea tonight at dinner with my parents, since I’m an engineering major a 3.0 GPA sounds reasonable right? and if after (my first semester or year??) I don’t have at least a 3.0 GPA, my parents have the right to stop paying for my college and if so I will reimburse them back for the money spent on the semester or year.

Also, I will promise to give my parents access to my university account so that they can check my grades/finances etc… at any time.

Go with the contract. (They should also know that U Mass Amherst has a reputation as a major party school, but be careful with that or they may refuse to pay for you to go ANYWHERE.)

I’d try for Clemson if it’s what you really want. Going to a school you hate just so you can transfer in a year makes no sense to me.

I like the contract idea. Let us know how it goes!

THE CONTRACT IDEA WORKED! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

now I will have to work as hard as I can next year but I am confident that I can do it

A 3.0 in engineering is nothing to sneeze at, either. Expect your freshman calc and physics courses to be weed-out courses.

Congratulations!

Since it was only one D, I am also confident that you can do it!

My d will attend Univ of South Carolina, so her school will be your rival…(we are also in Massachusetts)

Congrats Pierre - Wave at us from Memorial Stadium during the first televised football game!

Congrats dude. It must feel good heading off to your first choice school.

Congrats You’ll do well!

Start buying a lot of orange clothes. Friends of ours graduated from there. We went to a football game, and he had special orange bib overalls to wear!!! p.s. my neighbor’s dog is named Clemson! Hahaha, she obviously gives it 2 thumbs up (altho she’s a Texas A&M grad).

That contract idea was really smart. Two thumbs up. Have a great year at Clemson!

I recruited once at Clemson and thought it was a fabulous atmosphere to go to school. Enjoy yourself, and prove your parents are right to trust you to work hard and succeed! Approaching them with a contract must have made them feel much more confident that you’re mature enough to make it work. Good for you.

Good for you.
