Terrible idea?

I got waitlisted at Wellesley, and will have no chance to visit if I get in. Is it a terrible idea to go to a college that you never visitied? I'm pretty sure it is my first choice but it is the only school i haven't seen.

not a great idea; there are kids who first set foot on campus for orientation and know in a few hours they picked the wrong school. Could have been easily avoided by visiting.

Have you done other things to look into the school? Talked to current students, had an interview with an alum, looked at the school paper, livejournal entries of current students, etc?

I'm doing some of that. Ultimately though, if I get in ( expecting to hear the last week of may) I will have only about 10 days to reply. I understand that it would totally suck if i got there and realized it wasn't right for me, but i also don't want to take a pass on something that may have ended up being great. What do i do?

How do you determine this without ever visiting? How is Wellesley your first choice? What other schools are you considering?

i think it depends on the person. i think if you can be adaptable to all types of situations, you can attend almost anywhere without having visited the school.

i basically attend my school mainly for it's strong department, and at the very least i love it because of that. i think you learn to love a school if you end up loathing it. what are your two other schools?

I'll be sending a deposit to either Vanderbilt or Colgate.
311 Griff:
I like the location of Wellesely better than the others (City near enough to use, but inaccesible enough (40min bus ride) that it wouldn't detract significantly from life on campus)
I like the size better than Vandy (it is close to = w/ Colgate)
Study abroad programs are strong
Seems like it has a strong international relations major
Div. 3 athletics
Campus looks beuatiful and well laid out (based on pics I've seen)
Ranked high than the other schools I'm considering
there's a few other reasons i think,
Most of the info i have about Wellesley comes from their website. Everything i have seen on there i liked, but i agree that is not the same as seeing it in person.

Take comfort in the fact that you can't make a wrong decision here.

If you don't like Wellesley, you could transfer somewhere else after a year. I doubt that a place like Wellesley, even if you disliked it, would be INTOLERABLE for a year, given that it's near a wonderful big city, and has other elite colleges nearby.

If you go to Vanderbilt, you'll be going to one of the top few places in the country at combining big-time sports and excellent academics. And you'll be in an interesting and unique city.

If you go to Colgate, you'll be at a beautiful (but remote) college that is extremely well respected and apparently extremely well run.

TourGuide446 is right, you can always transfer afterwards. It's really to bad taht you can't visit the school though. Maybe try getting a DVD that gives you a better look at the college. Try THE U series of DVDs, they give you a really honest tour of the school through the eyes of the students that go there.

Thanks for all the advice ;)
