Wow I just got home from my interview and it did not go well. Not only did he ask me my GPA, rank, and scores, but he kept comparing me to the other "wonderful" applicants he had interviewed. I also felt like none of my answers satisfied him because everytime I would finish saying something he would just look at me, write something down, and go "mmhmm" and then ask another question. UGH - is this going to hurt badly? Any similar experiences?

Relax. According to this table from the NY Times, Yale considers but does not attach a lot of importance to the interview:

that sounds exactly(almost) like my harvard interviewer!!! except he didn't even ask me any questions for an answer.

well, you were lucky because at least yale only "considers" interviews. ugh!!

yale doesnt even care about the interview.

is it possible to have a second chance for interview?

if yale doesn't care about the interview, why do they offer interviews??? does that mean I did well for nothing?

they lie. they care.

a lot?

no. but, yknow. the alumni interviewers have a bit of input.

how long is an interview report?

my interview was like a friendly chat. she didn't ask me any questions...

well my interviewer told me that the interview was simply a formality and that they barely glance at them unless something amazingly fantastic/horrible is said.

hideANDseek--I don't think you can get a second alumni interview unless something went wrong with the first one, like the interviewer not showing up and you weren't able to reschedule. The length of the interview report depends on the interviewer. Sometimes I have a lot to write about a candidate, other times it's just a couple of paragraphs.

hotpiece-my Y interviewer asked me at least twenty questions(short ones)...I'm sure your interviewer asked you something. You were probably so engaged in the conversation that you don't remember.

admissionsaddict, a couple of paragraphs sounds a lot. i can't imagine anything longer than that...

well, my h interviewer wrote me a really generic letter because the interview went badly. he basically copied and transferred my resume. although nothing I said interested him, he could've at least given a narrative of what took place.

actually, hideandseek, my interviewer told me that the interview was just supposed to be a chance for me to learn more about Yale b/c i lived so far from New Haven. So, the only question she asked me was if i had any questions. She told me that the interview is really informal and is only supposed to last 30 minutes.

hotpiece-everyone gave me the wrong idea that interviews were supposed to last an hour...Besides, my interviewer scheduled an hour for me, then we went over that. I live very far from New Haven too-CA.

Now I see how much I digressed in my interviews(somehow I mentioned the flavor of an ice cream). But I always digress in conversations...

Admissionsaddict-is it bad to get off the tangent? is it better to be sharp with your point?

sorry, i didn't mean my last post to be an accusation. i was just saying that my interview was really casual and conversational (i.e. she asked me no questions) and really short. i was sorta shocked at it's length too... and i thought it was sorta weird b/c i don't live that far from New Haven. I live in Ohio.

but i guess the style of the interview could be attributed to her age, she was only 22 and graduated in 2005...

wow how come all my interviewers are 50ish?!

lol...yea, ohio is not far from new haven.

my other interviewers were old too, it was sorta refreshing to have a young female interviewer. it was really easy to relate to her.

but i love how she considers Ohio to be a huge distance from New Haven.

i think my interview was so short b/c she had to get back to work...

hideANDseek--I can't imagine tangents are a problem, but I guess it all depends on your interviewer's style. I hope my interviews are laid-back and if the conversation wanders all over the place like it would if you were talking with a friends, that's fine.

Interview reports can easily be several paragraphs. Check out sample reports:

I think it is only natural that everyone that had a bad interview (in their mind) wants to believe that the Y interview is meaningless and everyone that had a great interview (again, in their mind) wants to belive that the Y interview is at least a tip.

D thinks she had a great interview last year and likes to think that it had some effect on the outcome, which was an EA admittance. She still gets the occassional email from her interviewer asking how she is doing and how she likes Y.

My thoughts - don't get too wrapped up in whether or not it is a big deal in the Y approval process, just go in, be yourself and be positive as to why you think Y is the place for you.
