Terrible Stats- Really

I posted this in the NCSU forum, but I'd like to get some more views on it.

I was wondering what my shot was at the college of engineering in NC State. Im a junior, will take the SAT in May. (didn't want to take it before an SAT prep course) My stats are pretty bad compared to the ones on here. 3.45 weighted/3.11 unweighted, class rank 328/575. (not in lower 50%) When I add in the 1st semester of this year though, the UW is a 3.55. I'm really trying hard to bump that up, but Im running out of time. On my PSAT I got a 1660, but my SAT score will be higher. (On a practice SAT I got a 580 on the math-still have to work on that) Also, I work at Quiznos anywhere from 10 to 25 hrs a week.

Before I saw these boards I didn't even know how much colleges cared what courses you took, just the GPA. So in my HS career I never doubled up on any classes. (before HS I didn't even know you COULD double up) Anyways, right now I'm taking:

Chemistry (H) currently-B
US History (H) currently-B
SAT Prep- est. C or D its killing me
Vietnam War Studies (H) currently-A
Precalculus (H)- C
Team Sports- A
Weight Training- A

Senior I plan to take-
Weight Training
AP Calculus- should I take if I got a C in precalc?
AP Government
AP Physics
(What other APs should I look at?)

I'm taking all the PE classes because I plan to do ROTC for NCSU.

Anything I can do to improve my chances?

And would military service before college help improve my chances?

Um...it's not that bad.

Any other thoughts?

depends where you want to go

a sub 3.5 GPA pretty much kills all chances of going to an ivy league unless you are some massive football player or something, in general

He said he wanted to go to NCSU not ivy. Not being able to read kills your chances at life but back to the discussion. I got into NCSU early with a 4.3W/3.6UW and a 1850 SAT you'll probably get accepted into the first year college and upon doing well into the college of engineering.

Good luck the college admission process is killer.

Ahh My school is killer. I went in to student services to ask for waivers for AP classes, and they suddenly decided they won't do waivers anymore, so now I have to ask individual teachers for recommendations to each AP class. I hate how they play around with our lives like that.

Yea I think I lost my chance at an ivy league when I got my first B freshman year.

AP Calculus- should I take if I got a C in precalc?
Um. Maybe. and heres why:
AP Physics.
If your taking ap phys B, you dont need calc, but you do for ap calc C. Plus, ap physics is that much easier with calc. take some efort over the summer and prep yourself dude.

oh and, i would suggest taking a look at ap chem.
As for the military improving your chances, no, im pretty sure it would not at all affect your chances.

So handing out soup at a homeless shelter, yes it helps, putting your live on the line for the safety of others and serving your country, no it doesn't help. Thats pretty screwed up IMO lol.

study hard for the math. A 580 is really bad for a prospective engineer. Getting 650+ would help tremendously (pref 700+)

Good news is that the math (unlike critical reading :() is very prepareable. There's only a certain amount of problem types they can throw at you. (about 150 or so)

Study hard, good luck.
