I am terrified of standardized tests. I wanted some advice on how to prepare for the SAT and ACT, as I’ve never really studied for these types of tests before. Without studying, I received a 1300 on my PSAT, which is a pretty good baseline score to me, considering I didn’t even look at any test prep stuff beforehand. Anyways, just want some insight as to how to make my scores more competitive, for schools like UVA (in-state), Duke, and Georgetown.
My sons used the standard study books found in the bookstore, like Kaplan, Barron’s, and Princeton Review, as well as the College Board books. Pick one for an upcoming test and keep it with you, reading strategies and doing problems when you get pockets of spare time. Pay special attention to strategies that will save time on certain sorts of problems. Take several practice tests with someone timing you. Study the questions you got wrong. Being familiar with the test and the format will decrease your fear a bit come test day. Good luck!
If you are scared of the tests the most useful thing would be to practice like how the real thing would be. Take practice tests timed and all at once to mimic the real thing, and take them again if you run out. Do learn from your mistakes, don’t just assume you’ll do it right the next time. Actively figure out what you did wrong. Trust me this is what helps the most
Practice makes perfect! Get some SAT workbooks like Princeton, Kaplan, Barron, etc. Read through them and write down all of the good tips they give. Apply these tips onto tests produced by collegeboard. Try not to practice with tests made by other companies. They are a slightly different. I heard many people say this and I experienced this myself.
I don’t know much about the ACT, but I would assume that you would use a similar technique.
Essential steps you need to take are - find examples of the test and start practicing, you should know a structure of the test, try to remember math rules and formulas and write as many practice essays as possible - it also very important part of your SAT preparation process. And the most important - don’t be afraid:)
You also could find a tutor, who will help you with all this.
Besides I heard about one company, seems they have good preparation programs - www.qualitytutoringservices.com/programs.html
