I know this is probably a popular topic for most people out there. But I am a community college undergrad who is needing to transfer to a four-year university next year. I am planning to do a Spanish/Chemistry Double major and hopefully go to medical school. I was wondering what the differences were financially and academically for students who attend Texas A&M University and UT Austin with my same position. I’m not really interested in the rivalry thing, I am just needing to figure out what school will be right for me to graduate and continue my education.
Transferring from a community college to UT is going to be extremely difficult. They are highly selective and you will have to have a sparkling record to even have a chance. It is more expensive to attend UT than A&M due to the cost of living in Austin. I don’t think there is much difference academically but I don’t have proof of this. You will need to provide your stats to get a idea if your fit for these universities.
I attended the University of Houston my first semester of college and came out with a 3.31 GPA. I currently have a 3.56 at Austin Community College and have plenty of volunteer hours and extra curriculars. I’ve only dropped one class due to a death in the family.
If you are considering majoring in Spanish you should seriously consider Texas Tech University. I am currently a history major with a Spanish minor. Their Spanish department is excellent. They have excellent transfer scholarships. You should at least consider it. Also they are VERY encouraging with double majors. I would strongly recommend you at least give it a look. I never considered Tech & was looking at UT & A&M. A professor strongly encouraged me to look at Tech. I submitted a transfer application to their Honors College & was surprised with a very good transfer scholarship (Presidents Transfer Scholarship) & was given a job as a history tutor.
