As D was going through her class syllabi she noticed that some classes had “no class- Texas Holiday” or “no class -Texas Break”. We are from Texas so she knows there is no Texas Holiday on those dates. It turns out OU is playing UT in Austin that weekend so some teachers aren’t holding classes that Thursday or Friday. CRAZY!
The Friday of the Texas game is basically fall break. It just doesn’t appear on the academic calendar because it isn’t official. DS didn’t have any classes that day last year and all of his are cancelled this year too.
Are classes held the following Monday? That’s when I thought OU had off, so maybe it’s changed.
What got me was the Thursday classes being cancelled! I’m not sure if all of her Thursday classes are “Texas Holiday” but at least two of the three are (both in the same department).
That IS funny! UT never gave us any time off. But the UT-OU game was a lot of fun! I miss going. My parents still go every year.
The night before the game, UT and OU students would walk back and forth on a downtown street, the Longhorns yelling, “OU sucks!” and the Sooners chanting, “Texas bites!” So mature, ha. I also remember all the police standing guard, but there were never any problems that I saw.
They stopped playing this in Dallas?
@Texaspg you’re right the game is in Dallas! When it wasn’t listed as home game for OU I wrongly assumed it would be played in Austin. Thought schools switch off home and away games I didn’t realize they tried to meet in the middle for college football. We are not a sports following family and know next to nothing about football but since the game is on a Saturday and only a few hours drive away, why do the students get two days off for it? With Labor Day, Texas Holiday/Fall break and Thanksgiving break, it’s a wonder they get anything done in the Fall semester!
I am a huge sports fan. Addicted to college sports and professional sports. My D21 must not have my genes or her dad’s as she has no interest in any sports.
Since I have disdain for Baker Mayfield I am pulling for Texas to win.
Officially students only get the Friday before OU-TX off. However, so many students skip class that professors often just cancel Thursday classes as well since they know that only half of the students will show. I know I’m probably going to go to a morning lab section on Thursday, Oct. 6, instead of going to my typical afternoon one owing to travel plans.
The game is known as the Red River Showdown (fka Red River Shootout) and is played at the Cotton Bowl during the time of the Texas State Fair, also held in Dallas.
I guess I’ll suggest to DD that Friday is a good day to get laundry done;-) I’m thinking that’s a good time to avoid Dallas! Traffic is crazy enough just driving through from Austin to Norman I can’t imagine what it will be like with a big football game and the state fair, maybe that’s why they need the extra day!
