You don't really need a textbook. Just buy an in-depth Java reference book and program like a maniac. Study Gridworld. Know the "big picture" of things and how to apply them (inheritance and polymorphism are extremely big on the A exam).

We used Leon Schram's Exposure Java texts (I eventually got a 5 on the exam), but I feel as if most of the things we learned in class were not from the texts but rather the product of all-night group programming and suffering through our teacher's assignments, haha.

BTW CompSci AB will be gone after the 2009 school year, so if you really wanna take it, this is your last chance.

^I used Exposure Java too. You're the first person I met on CC who mentioned it.

yeah my class (which only had 4 kids) used Leon's book. I was in AB and during this class we used Leons book 50% of the time and the other 50% we used Maria Litvin's book. During the A course we strictly used Leon's book and i loved it! Schram really knows how to use his analogies and it helped me get a better understanding. Litvins book was convoluted

I remember Schram. He taught at our school.

Check out Skylit press for CS books

Barron's is really clear, easy to read, and thorough. I didn't do anything in my Comp Sci class and with a few weeks of studying from Barron's, I got a 5 on Comp Sci A. I got a 4 on AB this year, though. :/

I had the best AP CompSci textbook. The front had a picture of a landscape with large doughnuts flying over it. For no reason at all.
Maybe just because doughnuts are delicious?

I can't seem to find "Exposure Java" and would really like it to help with self-studying for APCSAB. Does anyone know where I could possibly find it?

trjohnson, Exposure Java is not a textbook..if you type it in google, it is the first website up..
