Textbooks for Fall - Help Needed

As part of the movein package that has the shipping instructions, Tulane will also provide your son with his exact mailing address at Tulane. Essentially it is a PO Box, and Tulane has (I guess it still has) a post office right in Bruff. So I would have them sent there. No sense having more to schlep down there when the time comes.

With encouragement from the CC group members, I dug in to figure how to purchase the books with bundled access codes. I found useful info on the book publishers site but no ability to purchase the access code needed. I was told not to give up so I emailed the publisher…they replied and told me the words all used book buyers hate to hear… “this is a brand new book this year so you have to buy the new book with the code”. :frowning:
I haven’t gotten as far and found out as much info on the other books yet, still digging!

I have relatives in NOLA…so I can ship books to them… My daughter already took 2 large suitcases with clothes to NOLa during orientation…I told her that she could not possible pack all this stuff in one dorm …we will see.

Calmom… I have the opposite problem with my son. My prediction is that he brings about 2 pairs of everything and that’s it. (ok, slight exaggeration but you know what I mean).

Thanks for the info about the shipping. I will wait.

@mavitale…girls simply bring way too much…my son has a fraction of the clothes my daughter has, and he is just doing fine, not even wanting for more…hope to meet you in August…

Thanks for starting this thread Calmomofthree and to all the contributors. The cost of books can really add up fast so keep the savings suggestions coming.

A friend recommended this site [Chegg, The Student Hub | Textbooks, Study Tools, Scholarships, eTextbooks & More](http://www.chegg.com/)

We compared the prices to Amazon prices and they are much better! She said her kids have had great success with it.

S2 gets most of his books as eBooks, either through the iBookstore or the Kindle store (has Kindle iPad App). He finds it both economical and convenient.

My son also has a Kindle (bought him the Paperwhite for graduation and then immediately upgraded my own. but only ONE book on his list is available as an e-book. :/

Just have him change his major to philosophy. ;)

Found two shopping portals, abebooks.com and directtextbook.com, that compare multiple sellers. Thanks mavitale for the Chegg suggestion. Textbook prices sure are fluid. Found the calculus at Amazon via direct. One down to many more to go.

Re textbooks: Another interesting thing I noticed that if I buy books on Amazon and ship to NOLA…no sales tax…shipping to CA 9%…another savings…

Also, remember students can sign up for a free student prime membership at Amazon which gives you free 2 day shipping…no minimum purchase amount which comes in very handy. My oldest son used it all the time, saving a lot of time on errands.

Have you guys gotten the shipping labels and mailing address for your students? I haven’t, which is why I haven’t ordered any books for him yet.

The prices on Chegg were sometimes $20 less than Amazon. I do have a Prime account myself, so there would be no shipping charge. But even if Chegg charges to ship I don’t think it would amount to more than the difference.

I’m thinking the rental option is going to be the most cost-effective!

Gave in, cried uncle. Ordered from Tulane bookstore. I had made a list for amazon, but wouldn’t be able to get the whole order there due to Spanish and Accounting course bundles. I tried splitting things up, but got nervous about pricing and amazon won’t hold for later shipping. Didn’t make sense to ship twice or watch the prices continue to rise. Renting didn’t make sense as my S is tough on books. So I decided to jump in line for possible used issues and have them at school for pick up.

You havent gotten shipping labels yet bc you haven’t gotten dorm assignments yet. Hopefully, by Tuesday.

Have not ordered books yet - waiting to see what the dorm assignment is…does that matter? Does it just go to a central location? I know I asked on a different thread what address to use for a gps - what about shipping?

Tulane will notify you of your student’s mailing address…ie John Student, #1234, 131 McAllister, New Orleans, LA 70118. 131 McAllister is Bruff, I think, or wherever the mailboxes are. #1234 is the student’s identifying mailbox number (tho it is not a post office box). hat number will be is/hers for as long as he/she lives in the dorms. When you order the textbooks, you will provide the above info to the textbook company and the textbooks will be shipped to your student’s mailbox.

Bloomy the books go to their box number: Dorm assignment not needed, but you cannot send it too early.
Full Student Name # (box number given out in the fall)
Tulane University
31 McAlister Dr.
New Orleans, LA 70118
I just ordered the books I found cheaper from Amazon and brought them on the plane and also rented some. They say they take the books back in any condition and if the books are lost you have to just pay the difference, so I rent if I can’t buy.
Ahh, posting at the same time as Vitrac…

Just to be clear, it is 31 McAlister Drive, not 131.

Can I send books to Tulane if I don’t know S’s box #?
