Textbooks off Amazon?

Hey, this is my first post and im an entering freshmen at UCLA :) I heard from a few sources that it would be cheaper if you buy your textbook from amazon.com or other outside companies, is that true?

More than likely, it will be cheaper. You should also check out half.com.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=234598

also, once you get your ISBN's, check www.amazon.co.uk. I bought a book there brand new and it was half of what it costs here... used. (thanks mikemac)

I ALWAYS recommend to shop around for textbooks. As much as I support the efforts of the bookstore and the ASUCLA group in general, there's something incredible about getting a text on Half.com or other similar sites for a fraction of the price.

I remember one purchase (Burying Mao?) was literally 80% of the UCLA Store price...

Yeah. http://www.bigwords.com lets you look up the ISBN and find the cheapest price among the textbook sites. Completely recommended.

Question about books purchased through Amazon. I just ordered two books today and the shipping window, so it says, is 2-4 weeks.

They estimatd that the books will ship between 10/02-10/05, and arrive between 10/07-10/14. Question is, is this accurate or do they normally ship with a week or so after the purchase date?

It might be important to mention that I elected to use the 'Free' shipping method.

Ciao.

I hate to be so...unhelpful... but my experience is that things ship when they ship. Predictions otherwise are just a waste of time and energy.

However, I can say that most times, things do ship sooner than later.

I second using amazon.co.uk In America they jack the costs up for us poor, hard-working students.

Well, I guess if your books don't ship on time, you can always buy the books from the bookstore and then return them once you receive the books (confirming bookstore return policy, of course).

I ordered all my textbooks on Amazon Marketplace and they said I would receive my textbooks between 4-14 days.

I got my first textbook in 2 days (amazing :P) and my second one in 9 days..so from my experiences they do ship sooner than later (but of course not 100% of the time..)

I'm in the process of ordering books from amazon. however I leave for UCLA in 2 weeks. should I just have the books sent to my dorm room? I could also ship them to my uncle's house, which is in the area, but I'd rather not do that.

Most are shipped from media mail, and depends on the location of the sender and your location.

Media mail comes they say from 4-14 days, but if it's really close (within 50 miles) the mail will come in 2-3 business days.

textbook n00bs

THe seller of my books is Amazon. I've purchased from Amzn before it's just that I don't remember them shipping my orders this long.

How would i find out the ISBN for the textbook? Sorry if this is a lame question :) thanks for all the help in advance

there was a thread for this...search "ISBN" in this forum

Goto your textbook list from myucla, and view the source of that page. Do ctrl+f and search for "prefer new." You should find something like . That number, minus the N is the ISBN code.
