Textbooks

Hi I am going into UVA this fall. Hello.
So, I bought my textbooks a week ago, and finally, most of them came... including my social psychology textbook.
I ordered a 6th edition one, but when I went back to the UVA bookstore site, I realized that I needed the 8th edition.
Will it matter too much if I use the 6th edition book instead of the 8th edition for my fall semester?

Yes it will. Dr. Wilson released the eighth edition which has practice questions after every chapter that was specifically designed by him. I highly suggest that you get the recommended version because the professor himself created the questions, which (I can attest to this as a former student of his) are highly reminiscent of the kinds of questions he gives on exams. Bear in mind that he does not give curves and some of this questions can get a bit tricky, so I used the chapter questions as guidelines. Also, a new chapter was added to the 8th edition that he teaches that isn’t in the older versions.

Just return your book back to where you bought it from; it shouldn’t be too difficult. And I’m sure you can rent the book at the UVA bookstore.

An alternative if you need to save money is to borrow a copy of the 8th edition from someone for an hour and photocopy the pages that are substantially different, if there aren’t many of them.

You might want to check with the prof before you go photocopying a ton of pages as there may be a copyright infringement. If you’re grabbing a page or two of questions at the end of each chapter, probably not a problem (although this is how he makes money, by making the old editions obsolete and requiring everyone to pay for new editions, killing the market for used editions). Copying an entire chapter may not be okay.

Another question about books… my daughter bought her books online from the bookstore over a week ago. I thought she would need to provide a cc# but she was only asked for her student id#. She picked up her books on move-in day (Friday). So far the book charges have not shown up in SIS - when will they?

Last year I got an email notice on 9/2, so about two weeks after the start of term, that there were charges due on my son’s account. If you are not set up to get email notifications ask your D to watch for an email from studentaccounts@virginia dot edu.
