Textbooks

Where do you find a listing for the books for each class? Do you purchase them now or wait until class starts? Thanks

If you go to the OSU barnes&Nobles website you can find a tab where you just enter your classes and it pulls up the required books. Many students wait to buy books until after the first few classes to see if the teacher says they dont need them. Last year I needed the listed textbook for all of my classes except 1 which I bought used and sold back (lost about $20). I generally order my books early to be safe. This way I dont risk the bookstores running out of my textbook and I dont have to hassle with the long walk from my dorm.

I am one of those who always waited until the first week of classes to see if the book was really needed (especially for general classes) or to see if an older edition was possible. Saved hundreds of dollars that way. I also ordered mostly from Amazon (B&N is typically terribly expensive).

Most professors will also place a syllabus on Carmen.osu.edu with their required/recommended books well ahead of time. I’m sure you can contact them if you have questions regarding their books as well

What is slugbooks.com? I entered an ISBN into google and the only site that came up was this one.

Just looked more carefully at the slugbooks site----- it compares prices of textbooks among several popular sites. HOWEVER, according to slugbooks, my sons required books for Chemistry 121 are ONLY sold at the OSU bookstore. How can this be? Any advice out there?

Sometimes they make “OSU Edition” textbooks (a great way to keep prices up). I would contact the professor to see if a regular version is available or check facebook to see if anyone is selling it. Also, B&N isn’t the only campus book store. It will definitely also be at UBX, SBX, and College Town on High Street

If you buy books before classes, be sure to keep the receipt and don’t tear off the shrink wrap until after the first class when the instructor tells you how essential the book is. Then you can return it if the instructor does not really think you need it. DS usually shopped online for used books and shared books with kids in his classes too. He has even borrowed them from the library when it was feasible and xeroxed sections as needed. Rebting books is also a great option to save money if the student is responsible.
