Thanks for Telling Me Your Thoughts 6 Months Too Late

Let me just warn you that this is more of a rant than anything.

I took Geometry this summer at a local community college in order to qualify for Alg 2/Trig freshman year. Today, I received an e-mail from the head of the math department saying that he didn't approve of my taking the class, but would grudgingly accept the credit and put me into the regular Alg 2/trig course. His disapproval kind of ****es me off. When I met with my counselor in the winter of 8th grade she had said that it would be fine, and did not try to dissuade me from going ahead with my plans. This was not a surprise, last minute, whim type thing. They had about a four month stretch to tell me that they thought I would be better off just taking geometry honors in 9th grade. And now, after my parents have paid good money for me to spend the majority of my summer attending math class four hours every day for two months, they want to tell me that they think I was foolish for trying to get ahead? How dare they..... Is my anger justified? I finished with a 96% for crying out loud. It's not like I couldn't handle the work (although, yes, I do realize that in summer school a lot of things get left out). I just wish that my counselor or someone would have told me the consequences of taking the class vs. not taking the class six hundred dollars ago. Then, maybe my future GPA wouldn't be lowered and I wouldn't be left feeling bitter.

Yes, you are justified in being angry. What right does a teacher have to hold you back from trying to reach your goals when they should be encouraging you? And really, it's common courtesy not to criticize someone unless you mean for it to be constructive... after it's over and done with isn't very constructive.

I'd say you should get your parents to call your ninth grade counselor and ask for the honors course. You were obviously able to handle geometry, and algebra II really doesn't require geometry at all. Plain and simple, it isn't fair that you have to be forced to stick to regulars.

$600?!? Community college classes here are free for those still in middle/high school. You just have to pay for the book. Wow.

Yes, justified.
