My Common App/UC App will be about how I come from a Chinese origin, but I can't even speak Chinese. Is anybody willing to ready/edit my essay? It's a draft and could use a lot of work. Thanks.

I could review it.

not very original; lots of people have parents that came from another country and didn’t teach their children their native language.

My kids can’t speak my language and I am not from China. there are a lot of them like that.

I did know Chinese when I was little, but when I came to America the last thing I wanted to be was “Chinese” so I stopped speaking the language to my parents and stuff. It’s about assimilating into America and what it can do to your own culture and character.

Assimilation does nt mean you give up your mothertongue. It means you also need to learn to speak English which is quite easy if you start attending schools in US.

I’ll take a look, I can probably relate :P

Not true. Assimilation means different things for different people.

Send it over! I would love to read it and give you a feedback.

sned it over :)

Hey now, I think that would make a promising essay topic. I can kind of understand, because I’m 100% Korean, yet I was born in America. My family is often disappointed when I don’t act as “Korean” as I should. You can definitely write about something “not very original” and make it memorable if you present it honestly and vividly. I’m an okay writer, but I could definitely read it if you want, unless you’re demanding a certain time from me because I’m trying to write mine myself (not going so well). Lol!

And hey, @texaspg, learning English is NOT “quite easy” for everybody. Please don’t make that assumption (unless I’m misinterpreting your words somehow). I have a friend who came from Vietnam in 6th grade. She is about to be in 12th and she STILL speaks with many simple errors.

Sure, you can send it to me.

I’ll read it!

PM me it and I’ll read it :)

Im interested, pm it to me

macaronicheese - so what if they make mistakes while they speak? You do understand what they are trying to say?

I know a kid who graduated MIT last year as Rhodes scholar who came to US in 7th grade, started to learn to speak english then. Did nt stop him from doing greater things than most people born and raised in US.
