"The Absolute Worst Campuses for LGBTQ Youth"

Neo-Nazis hate everyone. But, many people agree with your basic premise—being Jewish and LGBTQ are both choices. And some people, which may include religious colleges, may not agree with the “choice” to be LGBTQ.

If you’re asking for names of public figures, I don’t know, and don’t care. But be assured that your family has already been touched by a teacher, a nurse, or someone that graduated from a Christian college that wanted nothing more than to help, with hate never crossing their mind in their good deed.

I disagree with your characterization of the leader / follower relationship, both in academia and otherwise. This is antithetical to American culture. We’re not mindless robots following a leader. Independence. Individual responsibility.

I don’t discriminate, but I also don’t venture into thought control. Once that happens, people become a Yook or a Zook, in the Dr Seuss sense, consumed with which side other people butter their bread. A self-directed impasse. Tolerance, I say.

Being lgbtq is not a choice.
Did you ‘choose’ to be hetero or were you born that way?
You clearly have a lot to learn.

Neo-Nazis don’t hate everyone and they don’t think being Jewish is a choice. In fact, being ethnically Jewish is not a choice at all. Neither is being LGBTQ.

It’s easy to say, “people can think whatever they want.” Of course they can. And we can’t police people’s thoughts. And, hey, if you want to be tolerant of people buttering their bread with thoughts like “Hitler didn’t finish the job” or “all people in the LGBTQ community are pedophiles,” that’s your prerogative.

Unfortunately, those thoughts don’t just stay in people’s heads. They very often inform their actions, including outward hostility and, in the case of institutions, setting up a hostile environment for certain people and groups.

We can’t police the thoughts, themselves, but we don’t have to tolerate bigoted and discriminatory acts based on those thoughts.

And if discrimination is held up under the law, there’s nothing wrong with being informed about where the words, policies, and practices of an institution or organization amount to a hostile environment for certain communities.

You don’t have to be a neo-Nazi to be an anti-Semite- believe me, there are lots of perfectly respectable folks all over the country who hate Jews but who don’t share any other aspects of the Nazi ideology.

And as I learn almost every day- you don’t have to be an extremist to harbor hateful feelings towards anyone whose sexual orientation or religious affiliation is different than your own.

How is being Jewish a choice? Many thousands of people who had actively converted to Christianity were herded into gas chambers, in many instances, along with their non-Jewish spouses and children. The SS didn’t care if you believed in Jesus, had taken communion a week ago, or had a first degree relative who was a priest.

Back to the main argument- I’d love to see “The absolute Best Campuses for LGBTQ People” which would include students, faculty, staff.

Might I remind members of the forum rules:

“College Confidential forums exist to discuss college admission and other topics of interest. It is not a place for contentious debate. If you find yourself repeating talking points, it might be time to step away and do something else… If a thread starts to get heated, it might be closed or heavily moderated.”

Move on from debating anti-Semitism, homosexuality as a choice, and any other topic not related to LGBTQ and colleges. Also as noted in the link below, please do not use this thread to challenge the rules.

I had never heard of that website. Its very helpful actually. I wonder if there is a similar website for racial issues. That would sure make my life a bit easier!

When these colleges seek “tolerance,” what they are really seeking is license to continue to degrade, dehumanize, and discriminate against members of the LGBTQ+ community, free of consequence, comment, or critique. The irony is lost on them.

They mean that we should tolerate their bigotry, but they do not need to tolerate anything which offends the delicate religious sensibilities.

So LGBTQ folk should “tolerate” being called “perverts”, but they do not need to demonstrate tolerance for two men holding hands, or a person identifying as a gender which is different from their birth sex.

Tolerance is a two-way street, and these colleges have demonstrated absolutely ZERO interest in being tolerant of anybody who does not agree with their narrow definition of what is “right” or “wrong”. Thus, they also deserve ZERO tolerance for their bigotry.

Nobody should be asked to tolerate abuse, and calling somebody a “pervert” because they are LGBTQ is abuse. It really is as simple as that.

As a parent with a child that is not part of the LGBTQ+, I also appreciate this list. Why would I send my kid to any school that does not place a student’s mental health and safety as a top priority? If they are failing in this area, what other areas are they failing in? I also wonder if my child would be unsafe for supporting LGBTQ+ issues.

Guilty parent here. My son is at one of these universities and it is challenging for him. He’s a devout Christian in the truest sense and often struggles with the “redneck racist Trumpers” (his words not mine) there. Strangely there are many lgbtq+ folks on campus perhaps due to the large theater/music program, and while I wish it were a more accepting campus, I’m glad my son is there to be an advocate and countering voice. He’s often sharing Instagram posts praising Joe Biden, dissenting views on anti abortion rights, pro masking, pro vaccination, pro pride and other “liberal” viewpoints. Makes me proud!
