Well, I have joined the ranks of students who are unable to get the class they want. I was wondering, I am the 1st person on a waitlist for a seminar of 15 people, how likely is that I will get into the class?

I need that seminar to have my minimum 13 units, if not I will have to take 4 four unit courses for my first semester (16 units).

Any other seminars interest you? You seem reluctant to take another 4 unit course so perhaps take another seminar...which really depends on your major.

I like to use the 10% rule: if your waitlist number is under 10% of the total people in the class, you should be in good shape. It all depends on the professor and the popularity of the class as well as the class size, but I've found that outside of rare instances (language classes come to mind), 10% is a good indicator.

Well, I am not reluctant to take another 4 units class, but someone advised me to limit myself during the 1st semester. I feel rather mediocre, but perhaps that person is right. Are 16/17 units really that harsh on a new student?

The thing with the Freshmen seminars are that all of them already have waiting lists, and in some cases I would be the 15th person on the list. The ones related to my major were already filled by the time I got my Phase I appointment.

13 units is not mediocre, so you don't have to feel that way. College is a huge adjustment from high school b/c you are living in a different city on your own, have a different class schedule than HS, and you wanna make new friends & get involved, etc. That can be really hard with 16-20 units. So, take it easy! I'm sure when you are a junior or a senior, you will be wishing you could only take 13 units! Enjoy the first semester experience! Good luck! :)

It really depends on the student. You're better going easy the first semester rather than going hard. Some people adjust well, some people don't, and you won't know right off the bat.

Thanks for the comments, I guess its really going to depend if I make it into the 1 unit class. There are no other 1 unit or 2 unit courses available for me, so if I don't make it into the class I will be forced to take a 4 unit class to meet the 13 unit requirement.

Perhaps I should register on a 4 unit class just in case, and if I get into the seminar I can drop that 4 unit class.

There's no way you won't be able to find another 1-unit course. Check out the decal courses (www.decal.org -- there will be many more listed by the time school starts). You'll almost certainly find one that is interesting.

Good, because the last time I went on that site they had a list and 95% of the courses were already full. I tried to get into one of them, but apparently they made a mistake on the site because the facilitator had already graduated from school.

The list you saw was probably from last semester. Mosst decals give you a CCN the first couple of weeks of the class and the classes start the first couple of weeks of school. There are a lot of Decal courses to choose from, so there is no need to sign up for another class.

They are actually starting to be posted now. go to www.decal.org and there is a list of the classes that are available. There will be a lot more by the first week of school. And keep in mind that classes are always being added during the first few weeks. So just check out the site every once in a while.
