The all-important top 10%

This thread is from 2012!

Most people around here know about high school profiles.

FWIW, there is no restriction, quota, or target for Northern Virginia. The people who perpetuate that myth are not knowledgeable. Call me. I’m happy to talk to you if you are convinced of a quota since I cover Fairfax, Arlington, and the continuous cities.

In response to the latest comment: Unlike some other universities that are concerned about appearing to having a low admissions rate, my understanding is thate UVa does not consider the likelihood that a student will attend in its admissions decisions. Therefore, you will not increase your chances by constantly emailing the admissions office or by signing up for 6 tours of the grounds.

“As far as I can tell, for OOS students, being in the top 10% in a demanding school isn’t enough to do more than get the probability to about 25%. I suppose it depends on the competition in any given year, but based on the history from our school district in MA, it’s just as hard to get into UVA as an Ivy, possibly harder.”

For an unhooked OOS applicant, you are probably right that the UVA admission standards approach Ivy level.

The offer rate for OOS last cycle was 24%. If you back out legacies, athletes, URMs etc., the OOS acceptance rate is going to be a good bit lower. I’d guess maybe 15%?

OOS admission at UVA is selective, but we are nowhere near the schools that are in the single digits. [UVA puts the data out year after year](http://avillage.web.virginia.edu/iaas/instreports/studat/hist/admission/first_by_residency.htm).

Also, implying that all of the students with parents who have UVA degrees, are part of underrepresented groups, or those who play a sport are lesser candidates is wrong.

Time to let this 2012 thread go.
