The AP US History Study Thread

He also boycotted the '80 Olympics which were being held in Moscow

I know being Catholic hurt him?

um, not sure..WASPs went for Nixon, but JFK got votes from Jews, blacks, blue collars and Catholics

Hmm I think I'll just open it up with a new question.

Q:Which treaty ended the Mexican War?

Guadalupe-Hidalgo

Who was the leader of the "irreconcilables" in Congress who said that he would vote against the League of Nations even if Jesus came back and argued for the League?

Senator Johnson

What act was passed in 1943 which authorized government seizure of plant or mine idled by a strike if the war effort was impeded?

Meh, I was looking for William Borah of Idaho, he was the one who actually said that...

Guys, please try to keep your questions realistic. GinPA, I highly doubt something that obscure would come up on the AP exam. And I don't know the answer to delirious's question..

No question for me to answer...but here, realistic question!

Q: Bob LaFollette was associated with what state and which progressive ideals?

Wisconsin!

The nation's first colleges formed as a result of what historical movement?

My question asked who led a popular group in Congress during a high profile issue, it's not unrealistic at all. I just added the other half for fun, additional information.

Answer to Nishtdawg's question, I think.
The nation's first colleges formed as a result of the Morrill Land Grant, which gave land for colleges that taught agriculture and stuff like that, so settlers could survive better out west. One of the first colleges was Michigan State (yay for memorizing obscure details).

Q: What were the four theories supporting slavery? Include brief description.

Sounds like I have to write an essay. No thanks.

and people complained about my question...
This is a thread for questions that could be seen on MC, not FR

There are 4 theories? Erf. If this were an essay I'd try to argue:

An American off shoot of jingo-ism/the White Man's Burden.

Slave Trade / Colombian Exchange

Source of cheap permanent labor

Misconception that blacks would be better workers, immunity to malaria, etc.

Who founded the MA Bay Colony?

John Winthrop.

What event gave Martin Luther King, Jr. a national platform from which to express his ideas (hint: it involves a woman from his church)?

Oy...we're still only up to the beginnings of the Cold War. I'll still be learning new stuff up until like 2 days before the AP.

In my defense: I asked for a BRIEF description. Like...a one sentence thing for each. Possibly being able to recognize them on multiple choice questions.

And fine, this WAS a free response questions a few years back, but nobody ever specified that this thread for for MC questions only.

Anyways, for those who care,
Four theories supporting slavery:

Humanizing Theory: the fact that slave owners owned slaves made them (the slave owners) nicer to them (slaves), since they were property.

Mudsill Theory: every society needs a bottom class (ex. even the north had immigrant workers)

Universal Law of Slavery: slavery existed everywhere; even other African tribes enslaved one another

Plurality Theory: deals with brain size and inherent intelligence.

No offense, but where in g-d's name did you get that from?

Class. Our school is...liberal.
But seriously, our teacher was like, "LEARN THIS! This was a question a few years ago, and none of the kids in (neighboring, more conservative place) got this, but our kids did!"

Just more info: everyone, even back then, knew the theories were ludicrous and few few few people actually believed them. But they were still out there.

BTW, thanks for attempting the question, willact4food.
