Mathilda…is the Pyrex meant to be a good buy of the day…or are you saying it went back to Kohls, or that you didn’t order it at all so its like getting rid of it?

Thumper – I meant that I didn’t order it so it should count like getting rid of it.

If anyone needs Pyrex, this is a good deal

MM - Good for you! Curtailing the new stuff “into’” the house is part of the battle too.

Baby kiddo cleared a pair of boots and a purse out of my closet! :)

I’m joining the bag a week club. We will be downsizing in a few months. Our current house has tons of storage space and, I hate to admit, entire rooms that have become repositories for things I need to sort and either pack or purge. The house we will be moving to is half the size and has virtually no storage space. So the challenge begins. I’m going to start with the “junk rooms” then move to closets and the basement. I also have to purge lots of decorative objects. And, sadly, many books. I’m hoping this thread will keep me motivated!

I can’t do a lot right now but when putting up the Christmas decorations, I threw away a few things that I really don’t care for.

In Christmas decorations (and all things really) I try to prioritize items that are flat and light. Items that are bulky and heavy are a bigger challenge when moving/downsizing.

This week’s victory was in the dining room. I cleaned out a large buffet with huge drawers and 2 side cabinets. DH and I decided to part with about 5 old table cloths and other assorted placemats and items. I was so pleased with the uncluttered result that I almost gave a display at Thanksgiving dinner.

The furniture has an interesting story. My mother grew up with it in her house. Then when her parents moved to a retirement bungalow, they gave it to my father’s parents. I grew up thinking of it in association with their house. Eventually it went back to my mom and then to us. It will be my biggest furniture challenge if we ever move to a smaller place.

No plastic reindeer or santas in my garage! Disposed of those long time ago.

Threw out a few boxes from some electronic items Mr has been saving just in case. Soon, I will be tossing those electronic items, too! ;)

Last winter was so bad that I couldn’t retrieve the outdoor Christmas decorations until April. When I took them down, I took them right to the curb. I was so sick of them sitting out there and some had been completely buried under the snow for months. I did purchase some more, smaller, less work intensive outdoor decorations. I’m putting those up today and praying and hoping they can be taken down before April!

I cleaned out a large chest today and filled a garbage bag full of sweaters. Bag 1 is in the car to be dropped off at goodwill tomorrow. I also threw away several pairs of old shoes. My plan was to start with a junk room, but it was just too overwhelming. I had to start small. I know it’s a drop in the bucket, but at least I’ve started!

That’s why it’s a Bag a Week, Overtheedge. Start small and think about how much you’ll have accomplished in a year of doing one bag a week!

Today I got together a box of electrical cords that don’t go with anything. I will try to find a place to donate them, but if not, into the trash they will go.

I’ve done well purging a little while I have been decorating for Christmas. Getting rid of some old stuff and just taking a hard look at what I have vs. what I use. Today was garbage day and I had some old Christmas lights ready to go in the can, but I choked and put them back in the attic. They are perfectly fine, but I don’t use them…maybe some day. Other than that, I am progressing. Still so much to go.

That’s why we have Freecycle!! Just because they are “perfectly fine” doesn’t mean they have to live in your attic. Someone else would probably appreciate them more.

I dropped off 4 bags of clothing and shoes (D is a shoe junkie) at GW yesterday and threw out 2 bags of junk.

When I told H that I joined the Bag a Week Club, he asked if I planned to move in 6 years instead of 6 months. H said I need to join the Bag a Day Club. He’s probably right - we’re talking decades of accumulation. Perhaps I can step it up after the holidays. Meanwhile, I’m going to follow tired already’s lead and purge while I decorate.

You’ll be surprised Overtheedge, how it goes once you get started. You want to purge more and more because it feels so good!

cleaning the office shelves and have my bag for today. Took two lat week.
My sock drawer has never looked so good.

Today we had the monthly charity pickup. I sent off two bags of stuff.

Some things I give away via Freecycle. Other items I stash the items in a designated spot in the front hall closet. When ARC calls to ask if we have any items, I almost always can say Yes.

You’re right, it does feel good @2016BarnardMom. I just wish I’d started sooner. With the holidays looming, it seems like stuff keeps coming in as fast as it’s going out. At least I’m treading water - lol. When S comes home for Christmas I’m going to make him go through all the boxes he dumped in his room before he moved.

I spent two hours in the basement today and had about 4 contractor bags, and 3 large boxes of stuff as well as some loose things that wouldn’t fit into the bags/boxes. That was about 1/6th of the basement. There is so much to do down there I got really overwhelmed today. Then I reminded myself, the title of the thread is “Bag a Week”. I don’t have to do the whole basement in one week. I can tackle this slowly but surely. I do want to take advantage of my son being home and having him carry up some of the heavier stuff so I will focus on that over the next week- until next Tuesday night’s trash night.
