I think there needs to be a thread like this to enlighten the the young bears.

Best: Professor Frechet (organic chemistry)
Worst: Professor Hintzen (african american studies dept.)

Best: Steven Pedersen (ochem), Bob Jacobsen (physics), Anthony Bulloch (Classic Myths), Tonya Kim Dewey (German R&C)

Worst: Carol Redmount (Arch/Anthro)

Why Redmount? We’ve heard the Near Eastern Studies 18 class is great and easy. Not true?

Best: Kent Lightfoot (Anthro), Geoff Marcy (Astro), Josh Bloom (Astro), Ronelle Alexander (Slavic) & Xuanming Su (UGBA).

Worst: David Freedman (Stats)

volleyballdad:

Well, keep in mind that these are all fairly biased opinions we’re giving here. My reasons for rating Redmount poorly: her lectures were booooooring, and it wasn’t the material. I read the material on my own and was fascinated. It was definitely her. Also, she lectures really, really fast and therefore 1) becomes almost impossible to follow her if you want to take notes, which inevitably leads to 2) tuning her out which leads to 3) boredom.

Best: Alexandre Bayen (Engineering), Vera Serganova (Math)

Hey I know Geoff Marcy, he is my best friend’s uncle. When we visited Berkeley, we took us out to dinner every night and talked about Physics with us over Pizza. He’s a brilliant and nice guy.

Have many people taken prof. Dreyfus, I have heard good things about him.

john steel (math) - worst teacher i have ever had. teaches as if he were reading from the book and he makes so many mistakes.

Best: David Wagner (Computer Science)
Worst: Alexandre Chorin (Math)

Best: Alex Filippenko (Astro), Kevin Wallsten (Poli Sci.. but he no longer teaches here), Bob Jacobsen (Physics)
Honorary mention: Tom Goldstein (Journalism).. he knows a lot + made students pay attention to the news by giving weekly pop quizzes on the current events + we had a party on the last day of class. The only downside is that the class I took (Journ 141) was at 8am in the morning in Northgate (I lived in Unit 2).

Best: Alex Filippenko (Astro C10), Steven Wood (Econ 100B)
Worst: Brad DeLong (Econ 113)

For those who mentioned Jacobsen (physics), what do you like about him or the class?

Jacobsen is a really good teacher who stresses the importance of CONCEPTUAL physics rather than the nitty-gritty math of physics. If you’re into the more mathematical stuff, that’s fine, but for people like myself who really don’t care about physics THAT much and just want to take it for reqs and to learn some basic stuff, he’s an EXCELLENT teacher. His exams are extremely fair and they have almost zero math on them; it’s all conceptual, something I really enjoy. And his demos are pretty clear…when they work, that is. He makes lots of bad jokes to try and keep us awake, but once in a while he’ll slip a good joke in there. He’s especially good for Physics B (EM, Optics).

best: Muller (physics for future presidents), Diamond (anatomy)

worst: Adhikari (stats), Steel (math)

Best: Frechet (Chem 3A)
Worst: Wagoner (Math 54)

Best: Frechet (Chem 3a), Gronsky (E45)
Worst: Givental (Math 53)

nice thread! bump.

Why didn’t you like Adhikari? I think I’m taking her in the Fall.
