I can't find the recent postings about the "best" knife for midshipmen-where did the info go? We'd like to get one for our son. 19th Birthday is on Tuesday. The one he was issued isn't great and he's carrying his "leatherman" in his pocket. At chapel on Sunday, we saw lots of the kids with their knives in their back pockets...the ones with the "mariner's hook?"

I took the advice of KP2001 & got a good knife for our kid. Ordered the Spyderco stainless version & I can only repeat what he's said in that he uses it almost daily while out to sea. Said its "way" better than the issued "Plebe knife" they have to carry around Plebe year. It looks rather wicked but does one heck of a job on ropes. Bet I could cut my house in half with that thing. :)

What an incredible site this has become. RichVaMom asked for advice/suggestion, and within 30 minutes, she had what she needed. Ditto for the question about having dogs on campus. Someone should bottle this group and make a killing with a website that answers ALL your questions. :)

a "Leatherman" should be all he ever needs.. as Chief Mate I carried one for 15 years. I wouldn't carry anything else.. and that includes that "Spyderco" thing..
