the best major for pre-pharm?

ok so I know that to go into pharm school, u can apply under any major. but id like to know what major is better for the pharm school, biochem/bio or pharm chem? I checked the pharm school prereqs, and it seems like biochem/bio would be a better match. but id like to know other opinions. Do any of u guys know if u need to be good at biology for pharm school? or is being better a chemistry better.

also for pharm chem u need to take pchem and the phys2 series. I dont want my grades to suffer by taking pchem and phys2 series, and biochem/bio doesnt need pchem or phys2. plus i honestly dont think that we need quantum physics for pharm school. so which major do u think would be better for pharm school? thanks!!

lol i applied for UCSD under pharm chem! [hope i get in!!!]
i guess it depends on your likes. for me i LOVE chemistry a lot. im not a super chem genius [lol a 3 on the AP test], but i just love it [the knowledge factor]… so for me those classes seem *****inly awesome and interesting…
but if bio is more of a passion for you go bio.
i remember astrina for CC telling me that they are almost identical with a couple of class difference, so i wouldnt say it matters.

good luck on getting in! see the problem i have is i can either choose biochem/bio or pharm chem. if i choose biochem/bio, i know that that will give me better grades cuz of easier classes as opposed to pharm chem (phys2, pchem, achem lab). i guess what im tryin to say is is it better to be good at chemistry or at biology for pharm schools, like for pharm shcool curriculum would bio or chem prepare me better? i dont really want to take quantum physics and pchem if its gonna be useless for me for pharm school

Hi! I am a Biochem/chem major aiming for pharmacy. Pharmacy is predominately chemistry, so you should be deciding between a pharmaceutical chemistry and biochemistry/CHEMISTRY, not biology. Being a biology major definitely would not cut it for pharm school unless you went out of your way to take the required classes anyway; the major requirements are different from the beginning. for instance, you don’t need to take calculus (MATH 20 series) as a biology major, but that’s essential for pharmacy.

If you are wondering about the difference between biochem/chem and pharm chem though, I had an advising session with the biochem/chem department to ask the about it! :)

They are basically the same major; pharm chem is really just biochem with advising towards pharmacy. There is no set standard for what you need to get into pharm schools, so you must CHECK the reqs for each school you’re considering since they do vary. There’s a lot of little classes you wouldn’t expect to need for pharmacy, such as economics or public speaking. The difference between biochem and pharm chem major is that the latter tries its best to accommodate by requiring all these most common requirements.

You could very well take all those extra classes as a biochem major (I checked and there is a difference of 4-5 classes), which is what I’m doing because I’m not 100% sure if I want to pursue pharmacy, but I want to stick to the biochem field

and where did you get the idea that physics is useless for pharm school? oo did you look up any of the prerequisites for schools? UCSF, for example, is the #1 pharmacy school and requires a year of physics that is strongly recommended to be calculus based (as in phys 2 series)
I personally abhor physics, but of course I am taking it anyway since it’s required uu

anyway I hope this helped! be sure to do more research about getting into pharm school if this is what you really want to do!

for law school, it matters which grad school you go to (reputation, networks etc). but for pharmacy school, does it matter alot? i know, as mentioned above, ucsf is very prominent but is it necessary to go to prestigious grad school to be hired?

oh so when u say that pharmacy is predominantly chemistry, that means when we go to pharm school, we dont have to be good at stuff like genetics? i want to choose the major that will prepare me better for pharm school. so is pharmacy more chem-based (like u need to know what happens to ur body at the chemistry-level, not too much at the biological-level)?

ok so i know u need to be good at both biology and chemistry to be a pharmacist, but would having a better foundation in biology or having a better foundation in chemistry be better for pharm school?

chemistry. Pharmacology is more about Chem than bio. Of course when you think about it it has to do with the three Science Goddesses…- Bio, Chem, physics-… but ultimately Pharmacology is ruled by Chemistry. You would be taking more Chem classes then bio to improve your understanding of it. Imagine all the fun in Org. Chem!!

it’s really better to be good at both. biology stresses the ability to recall oftentimes-unrelated facts, chemistry stresses analytical thinking. you need both to be an effective pharmacist.

pharmacology is the study of drugs and their origins and interactions. it might be ruled by chemical interactions at the molecular level, but your immediate responsibility as a pharmacist is to know which drug is the best to provide, immediately, not to wander your way through a bunch of pathways. in my pharmacology classes, it was almost entirely memorization of which biological pathways were targeted and how everything tied together. pure signaling biology.
