Do Ivy Leagues like some sports more than others? I've heard that they prefer sports with small, harder to make teams like tennis than sports with huge teams like soccer or football. is this true?

Hi jayinj,
I don't think the Ivies "like" any particular sport over another. If you are very competitive in a sport and can document it through times, video, national/international ranking, coach recommendation, and so on, then you may be considered as a recruited athlete. Sports that require lots of bodies, like football, get more recruiting spots. Obviously, the tennis coach doesn't get as long a list.

If you are trying to figure out athletic recruiting at the Ivies, search that phrase on CC, or you might try asking about your sport on the school forum you are interested in. The most direct approach would be to email the coach for your sport at the schools you like and start a conversation. As long as the contact is student initiated, even if you are not a senior yet, you can begin to research your fit with teams and schools by talking to coaches by email or phone.

I took a quick look through your recent posts, and you are probably academically qualified for Ivies and selective LACs, but if your sport is tennis and you live overseas, it may be hard for you to document your qualifications as an athlete, unless you've competed against some of the top 100 or so high school players in the world. Having said that, I don't know anything about tennis in college, but there are probably people on CC who do. Keep asking.

Best wishes.

Probably fencing and rowing.
