During the "admissions season" admissions officers have it rough, reading thousands of applications, responding to hundreds of emails and phone calls, and holding national, and some international, recruiting sessions, as well as tons of filing, phone calls, and tough decisions. What exactly do they do during the rest of the year?

yes they are...
planning ... deciding.. stuff.. then round yr admission related other stuff....managing already made admissions..

then round the world tours in their areas to encourage ppl.. and all that

basically.. August - April is admissions peak decisions time...rest in may.. june july ..well other special admissions tours and making forms for next yr . etc..

Does anyone else think that being an adcom would be a really cool job? I think it would be awesome to work on a college campus. Goldfish is right, you would have to have a pretty good attention span to get through all of the poorly written essays, but I don't think it would be bad.

I agree. It does sound pretty enticing, but I'm not sure I would enjoy reading the 400th application. (I tend to enjoy everything in small doses, and I tire of things quickly.) How many of the essays are that poorly written anyway? They're applying to Princeton, right?

Read "The Gatekeepers" which accounts for a year in the life of adcom at a selective college. Fall is on the road recruiting continuously. Nov./Dec. is the early writes and after April 1 there is more recruiting for the next year. Getting up every morning 7 days week (Jan&Feb) knowing you have to read/grade 20 + applications is fun? Full academic year job.

That's what I'm saying. I think it would be interesting doing a few applications and visiting schools, but I'm not sure I would enjoy doing it for an entire year.
