The BS Class of 2015 Thread

Senior Spring slack off for BS parents…

Busy ordering graduation announcements.

Anyone attended Sparks Rowing Camps? How is the camp like and can you recommend them?

With your college tour experience, can you recommend some colleges (Univ and LACs) with good pre-med programs?

What’s a pre-med program? I thought all you had to do was score well on the MCAT. I don’t think your undergrad program/school matters much.

Grades count, too. But you can take the prerequisite courses anywhere.

Core courses for medical schools…

I have heard certain colleges focus on teaching pre-med courses well and get a high percentage of their pre-med (bio, chem majors) students into med schools? They also have other resources to prep students well for med school admission interviews and the MCAT. I don’t know which these colleges are. JHU may be one such college.

You do not have to have a science major to go to medical school. You just have to take the prerequisite courses.

Like all graduate programs, they look at grades, what school you attended (yes, prestige matters SOMEWHAT), and definitely the MCATs. As twinsmama said, the major doesn’t matter, as long as you complete the (relatatively few) required courses. From Forbes magazine a couple of years ago: “The liberal arts, moreover, also serves as a preferred pathway to rewarding and remunerative careers. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), medical schools accepted 43 percent of the biological sciences majors, 47 percent of physical sciences majors, 51 percent of humanities majors, and 45 percent of social sciences majors who applied in 2010. “Admission committee members know that medical students can develop the essential skills of acquiring, synthesizing, applying and communicating information through a wide varietyof academic disciplines,” the AAMC states.”

Can’t believe that 7D1 only has 3.5 weeks left in her SAS student career. How are all the class of 2015s (parents and kids) doing? Are college choices set yet? May 1 is traditionally the day when deposits are due, right?

We have about five weeks left. Choate graduation is June 7th. College choice was made early February. We’re just looking forward to some time with our kiddo this summer before his next journey begins. Like 7D, I can’t believe how fast BS went. It seems like yesterday I was making my first timid post here. Now I’m starting over on his college forum.

One of the drags about summer after high school graduation is how short it is. Most college start dates are so early compared to BS start dates.

@doschicos: Fortunately I don’t think 7D1 has to be at her college until late August…which is good, because she has to learn how to drive this summer and I’ll take every day of practice that I can get!

Not getting your driver’s license until after HS graduation = boarding school problems. My kids were on the same schedule for driving. On the plus side, there are a lot of benefits of waiting those extra couple of years in terms of maturity and driving ability.

Funny but my D just texted me saying “can’t believe it’s almost over.” I think she feels a sense of excitement but some mixed feelings about leaving the “cocoon.” D formally committed last week, although she had her mind made up in December. We avoided all that last minute decision making that so many seem to be grappling with right now. But of course it is nice to have all those choices! She is finalizing her summer employment plans and we are hoping to etch out some family time away this summer. D has had permit for a while but needs to take the driving test and get a few more hours under her belt. Her younger brother beat her to the driver’s license!

It’s been a long but satisfying journey and I am happy to have shared it with all the BS parents here on CC.

@HarvestMoon1: I really can’t believe it’s been 5 years (if you count the year our kids applied). Though when I think about how many hours/days/words I’ve spent on CC, sometimes I wonder what else I could have done with that time! Written a novel? Finally caught up with expense reports/timesheets? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve come up with a special way congratulate SoxKid on his enrollment at Penn. My boarding school french teacher and I have kept in touch over the years. He is retired now and his retirement gig is appearing as Ben Franklin. So Ben is going to create a personalized video welcome SoxKid to Penn. I cannot wait to see it.

Just thought I’d pass along an article forwarded to us by CK’s CC reminding her counselees to please notify the colleges they won’t be attending of that decision. All the reasons to quickly and respectfully do so are nicely spelled out:

@redsoxfan18 - Not sure how close you currently live to Philly, but what a great dining and museum town! Your visits to SoxKid will hopefully include some wonderful meals an culture.
