I've read this book 3 times...twice this week and once around 8-9 months back..It's one of my favorite books.
Maybe it was banned because of the word "goddam". The book is from the 1940-50s and maybe it was considered profanity then. I don't know about it..

I liked it, but I don't think I understood the author's message. I just felt like there were parts of the main character (Holden-something?) that I could relate to.

I think everyone I knew loved that book except for me. I absolutely couldn't stand Holden, and I really couldn't find much to sympathize with because he was just so annoying. I mean, it was better the second time, but I couldn't bring myself to try it yet again. It just wasn't what I expected it to be, and it wasn't very good...

All my opinion, though. A lot of people liked it, and that's fair, but I didn't enjoy it.

To add on to molly, it was the first book of its kind. The narration is jolted, uneven, skipping from thought to thought, idea to idea, has profanity, bad grammar, etc...how a person ACTUALLY thinks. I think it's brilliant: a very accurate portrayal of loneliness, of how judgmental everyone is (because we all are viciously judgmental, whether we act on it or not), how we often do what is painful just because it is what we know.

it has to be one of my favorite books of all time. I think almost everyone can find it easy to relate to Holden, and thats why i think i love it so much

This book is highly rated because it quite vividly captures the typical teenage angst and alienation, Holden's disgust with "phonies", and it slowly reveals the undercurrent of his mental illness.

Also adding to its appeal was the hermit-like reclusiveness of the author. He basically withdrew from society and produced very few other works, which made him seem like even more of eccentric genius.

It was banned for the foul language and the mild scene with the prostitute - considered corrupting in a book about and for teenagers.

I also hate Holden. And I hated the book when I first read it. I never studied it in class so I didn't even realise that there were 'hidden meanings'.

It was only after some google researching that I began to appreciate the book.
