So I am thinking about applying ED to Brown, but I want to get an idea of the social scene. Is it all partying or are there quiet places you could go to read a book? Is it the kind of place where you are obligated to be social 24 hours a day, or is there room for solitude?

There’s people at both extremes and everywhere in between, and accommodations for all of them.

Bump…

What matt said. You can have a single (with a little luck and planning), or a quad your sophomore year. You can be in a frat and drink every night, or sub-free and study all the live-long day. You can go to the top floors of the SciLi and be silent, or go to the basement and be social. There are white boards and rooms to work in groups, and carrels to work by yourself. There are kitchens, lounges, etc. if you want to study someplace you can get easily distracted. Plus, you can take classes that are so difficult you’ll be studying most the time, or classes so light you spend less than 20 hours a week outside of class on them. And even if you’re taking easier classes, you can be in so many groups you don’t have time for yourself, or none at all.
