So back on topic to how the HS Class of 2007 seems to be not as capable intellectually(hope thats better citygirlsmom) as those of previous years...

I was looking at the honor roll and high honor roll lists for our school...well MAINLY the high honor roll because the regular honor roll isn't all that tough to get on (85.5, wow!) But anyways, it was like a step ladder. The 12th grade this year had probably 20 names, junior list about 16, sophomore about 13, and freshmen about 9...it seems something is going wrong.

I don't see how the title can be offensive. It's straight-up literal. Our classes scores are, on average, lower than the previous classes.

logisticslord - don't people tend to try harder later in high school?

I guess so theo, but still, the lower grades aren't as smart this year as in the past

do you think the lower test scores will affect the no. of applications to top tier universities, or that the no. of Ivy and other top school apps will continue to increase at an alarming rate?

I doubt it. The score decrease is only 4-5 points per section, which is an average of less than 1 question that each student gets wrong. Also, this estimate is for the general population and doesnt really represent the scores of the Ivy applicants. Just because the average is 520 or so for each section doesnt mean everyones score is going to be that low, and a slight decrease in national scores doesnt give an indication of the people who are bent on success anyway.

true, true...i figured about the same thing...just wanted some opinions.

Citygirlmom, while I admire the fact that you stood up for something you believe in, I also feel that this arguement was pretty pity. Many words and phrases in our society no longer have their orignal meaning, but instead the meanings that society dons upon them. Common sayings such as "That's pimp", "That's wack", and "That's gay" do not literally translate into that's a male who solicits clients for a prostitute. That's retarded is a common thing that many people say to refer to something they feel is stupid, and that doesn't have to be stupid in a mentally challenged way, but just something that doesn't live up to their standard of "coolness". Words only have meanings if you attach meanings to things, and I highly doubt the person who created this thread placed a lot of meaning into his words and wished to purposely hurt people. Sometimes I feel that our society is so polically correct that people are afraid to say what they truly mean.

It's just a forum..i'm sure there are no mentally challenged people here. It's a slang term these days and im sure no one would use it in front of a mentally challenged person.

This thread's so straight.

whatever....if cgm finds it offensive, then why dont we all get along...i dont mind saying "below average" instead of retarded. everyone understands that its just slang....

i sure hope this keeps up until im in college...i'd love for everyone in my class to be lower-than-average. better chance for me, lol.

actually, I do use the slang word, retarded, but it wouldnt be right to fight the class of '07 because retared means slow and i doubt the class of '07 is slow, stupid (or less than average) but not slow. so the word altogether doesn't belong here

*"Yeah seriously my junior class is beyond retarded

I swear .. a girl said (exact words)

"HEY SO OMG SAT SCORES CAME OUT!!!111 . . . . . i got 1500, and for ivies anything above 1700 is excellent!! and i'm not even aiming for those schools so my score is soooo good. Highest score is 21 right??"

I walked away before I lunged for her throat."*

Oh man... this is seriously what I read in the comments of a friend's LiveJournal the other day... "I got a 1270 on my SAT, so when I went to visit Georgian Court, the teacher we were talking to said that my score was pretty good, and that I could get into any college I wanted."
[rough quote] I was like, are you joking? Maybe they thought you meant a 2270.

no, it's gay. and by gay, i don't mean homosexual.

^Gay simply means homosexual...any other meaning is simply retarded and offensive

Besides 2007 rocks!!!! We're definitely better than all the younger people haha

my class is not under average by any standard. our class was pretty dumb in freshman year but now it seems everybody's kind of smartened up.

but if nationally this is really true, then it is quite good for me.

amievil makes a very good argument, in my opinion.

We have someone who got an award from Prudential Financial, someone who got a 2340 on the SAT on the first try, someone with a perfect score on the CR, someone who got a 1350 SAT(old scale) in 8th grade, the same person taking AP Calc BC in junior year. I feel SOOOOO below average.

Errr...we had 8 last year taking Calc BC as juniors, and 7 this year. We had 3 1600 first tries, 2 2400s, a 2390, and probably some >2350s around the place.
