re: University of Miami cancelling spring break - that is irony! (And I’m sure the smarties there know the difference between irony and simply a bummer!)

I guess, on the bright side - USC still wants your kid for another major? Or they want your money. Probably both! Take it as a compliment
No sour grapes here. My D got into a very good program. UMich was always going to be a long shot, and she almost didn’t apply and hardly cared when she got the rejection. I still can’t get over the fact that 3 SD students were accepted who all had the same coach. That doesn’t represent a diverse (regionally) student base. It shows laziness on the part of the auditioners and reeks of cronyism. And btw this is not going unnoticed by the theatre community.
@Skymomla UMich MT has already addressed it. In fact even my daughter, had her numbers slightly wrong. The information sent out regarding BIPOC students is that UMich MT made 25 offers for an expected class of 22 to 24. Students are representative from 14 different states and 56% identify as BIPOC. Decisions are holistically made and the list of factors is too long for me to list here. But it is of course artistic and academic. No one individual is responsible for anyone’s admittance to the program or university. The admissions process is also needs blind.
I will repeat for the hundredth time that some students use coaches and some do not. Both groups are represented in the newly admitted class. Although it may seem unusual to some that three students in California could come from the same coaching agency, it is no different from the number accepted from other coaching agencies in different parts of the country (for example MTCA, in the metro-NY area). These students are undoubtedly talented but their success also speaks to the knowledge base of the coaching staff.
I have reached out to the moderator on College Confidential about clear misinformation in the earlier post. I am glad that the college MT community is paying attention and is working to actively address false and inaccurate rumors which have been spread online.
Wishing everyone a successful audition season and that your children find their best fit.
Good luck to all.
My daughter had 5 rounds of auditions for Carnegie acting, made it to the final 30 and was told that any program would be lucky to have her. Unluckily it just wasn’t Carnegie!
i would argue that CMU would also be lucky to have her. to get to that point means they would have been happy with her or she never would have gotten that far, imo. it’s just a matter of the tiny number of slots and probably what “type” they had gaps in.
i hope she has other wonderful offers. i will also say that process sounds heartbreaking and probably very much what the real world of broadway is like!!!
Vincent Cardinal has annouced he is stepping down as head of Michigan’s MT program.
Yes, before this thread blows up again. This has been in the works for some time and the Michigan community has known for the past year. Everyone wishes him nothing but the best. He will remain at Michigan as an acting professor!
It was not well known for the Class of '25, which is the topic of this thread. I thought you retired from CC.
In his communication to students, he stated part of the reason for his decision is his own perceived inability to change the bias against members of the BIPOC community. Given the diversity (by race) of the Michigan MT students over the years, that is saying a lot about the problem across the industry as a whole.
I pretty much have retired - thank you for reminding me. But it makes me sad to see the misinformation regarding a program that really is wonderful. I have also been thinking in the back of my head about Vince’s retirement and when that would be announced because of this whole email/blog post controversy. If I am still on here, it is only as one of the few Michigan parents who have been happy to answer questions or help others learn about the program. The email’s I have seen and that have been shared with me by my daughter point to other more personal reasons, but I’m not here to speak for him. If Vince wants to show up on CC he can! I agree with you (and Vince!) lots of work to be done in the industry and in universities. Let’s hope all all our kids can meet that challenge. Once again wishing everybody well with whatever program you go with!
@singoutlouise You’ve made it clear that you have a dog in the race and I get it. I hope that nobody removes any information from CC because it would render this forum virtually useless. I’m new here but I have noticed a trend of parents getting angry and defensive, especially from prior years, about programs that their kids are now attending. That’s not useful, nor does it allow people to share and vent - which is the purpose of this particular forum. You have no proven information nor misinformation, just your opinion, which you have made abundantly clear. We get it - you have a kid at Mich and you love it there. I’d like to create space for people with all sorts of different opinions and I would ask that you give other parents the room to do that. You are always welcome to start another thread and share your views there!
It was a hard blow for her, and she didn’t even make it onto the WL. I will say that it made her feel very rejected and hopeless and we had a full day of junk food and reality tv! She auditioned for very few schools and so we wait until April 1. I’m under the table breathing into a brown paper bag. She’s out thrifting.
Well, after touring a few campuses over spring break a decision was made. Not going to stress over the waitlist game when there are amazing offers on the table! She is headed to Montclair and is thrilled!!
I hear you @theatremom1314. But I respectfully disagree. I think it is nice when there are a few people who show up periodically who actually have students in the various programs being discussed. They can add a valuable perspective and information for prospective students. I am only here to post about Michigan and nothing else (probably wouldn’t even still be looking if I wasn’t at home during a pandemic!). I have to admit it was distressing to pop on and see the anonymous blog post being spread and the immediate reactions to it. CC is evaluating it because that is their job. As it has been noted in the past, families come on here for info and you want that info to be accurate and substantiated. I’m commenting this morning on the post noting the resignation of Michigan’s head because it’s natural for people to immediately jump to conclusions in light of the “circulating email”. I think it’s helpful to know that Michigan’s decision was long in the works. Just hoping to add clarity.
I think sharing and venting is great but accurate information is helpful. I know that is how I used this forum in the past. Once again, only good wishes for all of your kiddos.
Congratulations on Montclair! Were you able to do live tours or did you have to include some virtual?
Yes, would love to hear people talk about how they are touring campuses and how it’s affecting your decision making!
We are doing one in person tour, one virtual (school won’t allow us to visit due to state restrictions), and one we are doing our own walking tour because all the in person tours are booked
Hard to compare them when they’re all different experiences!
Edit to add: we are also trying to take advantage of virtual info sessions too
Sending hugs to your girl and you! It’s so hard when you’ve put your heart and soul into something. But this “hurt” will heal and she will come out stronger. But right now it needs to be nurtured and that’s what we thespian parents thrive. Remind her that there is nothing to fix, because nothing is broken. She did her best where she could and that is her truth. @dharmawins is so right - she was more that good enough for CMU. And where she lands will be the best place for her.
I have been hesitant to post here because we are not having success and she may not end up doing MT, which feels a bit sad after all the incredible time, effort and money. She did get notice from MMM yesterday where she was waitlisted that while she was not offered a spot for MT, they are offering her a BFA Acting spot, which we see as a huge win still. Did this happen to anyone else? Anyone have a D going to MMM? We are going to do an in-person visit on April 15 so very exciting. Congrats to everyone and I feel all the hurt as well. Looking back at the year is difficult right now but trying very hard to look forward instead.
We have a friend that got deferred to Acting at MMM last year and loves it there! I’m sure I could connect her with your daughter.
That would be wonderful. Thank you!
