The Classic Struggle, What Should I do?

My final selection for colleges has come down to Pittsburgh and Kansas, both of which I visited this week. Any advice/ideas would be great.

Pittsburgh was completely blah. It's too urban for me (but bareable), and the campus is a little dirty. It's not in the best location (close to ghetto). The people seem dull and boring, and there's not a feel of a community. However, Pittsburgh generally is better academically, and admissions is harder. I know, I know, admissions sounds like such a stupid reason, but I can't help myself. Almost anybody can get into KU, believe me when I say it's rather easy. Any average person can go, and for some reason that bothers me. It shouldn't, but really though, would you be comfortable saying you could have done nothing in high school and significantly worse on your SATs, and still be in the same place? Something doesn't sit right with me.

I absolutely loved Kansas. The city is beautiful, the people are the friendliest I've ever seen, and the campus is absolutely incredible. The place literally feels like 25,000 friends. Their journalism school (which I'm interested in) is apparently not that bad either. It was in the Top 15 in 1996, which was the last time they ranked journalism schools.

Obviously, I'm leaning towards Kansas because I absolutely loved it while Pittsburgh put me to sleep. It also helped that Kansas was 70 degrees and sunny while i visited while Pittsburgh was 40 degrees and pouring rain. Should academics matter? Will I regret not going to the stronger school, with a more elite student body? HELP NEEDED!

It sounds like you would be so much more happier at Kansas. Go for what your heart tells you.

My two cents- go where you think you'd be happier: Kansas.

Yes, Pittsburgh is a little more selective, but it isn't tiers above KU, and it seems like you'd be kind of miserable there.

Every university has easier and harder classes. Kansas has it's share of incredibly smart students, and Pitt has it's share of complete idiots. I don't think you'd notice a huge difference in intellect between the schools.

Go where you can see yourself living for four years... and if you go and you're unhappy, you can always transfer!

disregard that post.

id say go with KU. did you not apply for the honors college or the scholarship halls? and KU is an okay school, just do well, it wont hold you back from top grad schools if you do your best. good luck deciding!

I applied too late for University of Kansas honors, I applied on a whim really late in the game.

I think I can be placed in honors classes because of my SAT score though...I don't know if that makes me considered an "honors student" or not

if you think the bad weather influenced you, then visit again. There is still time.

However in the end academics are not the end-all of college. If you hate the school, the climate, the location, it isn't the right place for you. College is mostly what you make of it, and if you will be happier at KU then thats the right place for you.

KU BABY!!! Seriously! I know people who chose the prestige route, and now, a year later, and choosing the transfer route. Go where you heart tells youm not your ego. Good luck
.

I love Pittsburgh, but go with your heart. It doesn't even sound like a close contest. Maybe you can apply to the honors program at KU for second semester or for sophomore year?
