My guess is some of the increase is due to increased number of high school students applying to college, both domestic and foreign students. BUt I'm also guessing the biggest increase in applications is due to the fact that kids are applying to more schools than in previous years. I

applied to seven schools and I thought that was alot. I heard tell of 10 -12 schools by some kids is fairly common. I think kids just want more choices to see what mix or acceptances and aid they can get.

With the prices just getting higher and higher, you need to try and maximize your aid. I hope it works out for all of us. Like most people the aid package tells me how much you want me more so than the acceptance letter. Conversely, a bad aid package with acceptance tells you the school thinks you should go elsewhere.

janesmom1 - If you're saying that not anyone can get in anymore, I'd agree. But if you're saying that even competitive students (top grades, good involvement, etc) will have trouble getting in, then I'll have to disagree.

Today's Emory Wheel has an article stating that applications are up 7.8% over last years--15,330 applications for a projected class of 1255. Last yer's freshman class was 1.340 because of a higher than expected yield so Emory might play it safe and admit a few less this year.

i can't recall the demographics but the trend should continue until the hs class of 2011 or 2014 at which time the baby boom is over.

as to your other comment about great gpa, scores, etc not having a tough time,it depends greatly on the school. even this year some outstanding brains are getting the reject notice from very good schools especially as schools become more holistic in their selection methodology.

again, it pays to work from the bottom up on your selection of colleges. safety, match, reach.

it will be very interesting to compare the ED admit stats and RD stats this year and see if there's a big difference due to the increased apps just about everywhere. even duke recovered.

^^ wow, thanks!!! Um, I meant did you do a search on google, or did you find it on your school's websites. Im trying to look for ASU's, but Im not sure...maybe because its rolling admission?

christi: you can google it and find a lot of info. most colleges are releasing day by day--asu may not have released it yet. sometimes it's in the school newspaper, other websites sometimes have the info.

The application increases seeme to be anywhere from 5 to 30% in most colleges. It is not primarily due to population increase because that increase is certainly less than 5% from the previous year.
The ease of online application, increased awareness among HS kids and increased affluence in Asia (so more internationals are applying) have all contributed to more applications this year. The colleges will have a tougher time predicting the yield as well as they did in the past.

Do you argue to reduce the acceptance rate and boost the financial aid/grants/scholarships?

Do you urge the adcom to keep everything status quo?

Do you persuade them to increase the acceptance rate and hope that the yield is less than anticipated so you don't have to house the kids in the YMCA? or have to rent rooms at the Holiday Inn?
