I'll be asking a couple of specific questions tomorrow.

Why dont you try google and wikipedia?

previous post: “Google and Wikipedia truly are your friends”

^^^^

Wikipedia and Google are our friends.

What has that have to do with the fact that the CA is a terribly thought out form?

AGREED! 10char

That is the advice Golffather gave me when I posted a question…he should take his own advice and find answers about common app …just saying

Sorry, I don’ t recall the specific refernce.

But again, there is no connection between advice and an assessment / opinion that the CA is poorly worded.

The problem with the CA is the same thing I see often at work … the people writing the questions or prompts know in their mind what information they’re after. But already knowing the “goal” clouds their writing ability, instead of seeing the question from the the view of the “newbie.”

And this just happened today.
Here are instructions I received from work:

“Enter the following parmeters …”
Following that were field names and and some text.
Should one enter the text that was printed or something else?

Instead of “Type your login ID in the top space and type your password in the second space.”

Simple, direct English is always the best way to go.

Clear writing is hard. And it has nothing to do with the stuff tested on the SAT, or taught in most English classes.

^^^^

Yup, very true.

Hi GolfFather!

I have to agree – just trying to enter stuff for S’14 like his parents’ education history – it’s a clunky site, and not intuitive. And it sounds like you can only have one paragraph break in the essay. I’ve been bounced out several times already. What happens when it gets some real traffic?

I’m regretting the advice I gave S14 to get as much of common app done before fall sports started. D12’s version of common app was much easier to navigate. I’m guessing that after a month of complaints and fine tuning this version will be easier to use. Or at least that is my hope.

I am surprised they removed print preview feature. It was a good way to ensure the answers are properly formatted.

I am also baffled by the window size for essays. How hard is it to make them much larger so people can see what they are typing?

It’s a train wreck.

The tech support staff told me that the print preview wasn’t removed but your app needs to be finished to use it. It’s the only way to actually see your paragraph breaks in your essay.

But I agree I’m not a fan of how the App is set up either.

I just can’t get over the fact that the Common App IS NOT FINISHED. Meaning, of course, “they” are not done uploading supplemental essays, extra questions, debugging, etc. Basically screwing my daughter’s chances, because she must be finished applying by the end of August, due to all kinds of very normal college senior circumstances, like 4 AP classes, a fall varsity sport, a major event she’s planning at church. She can’t even write some of the supplemental essays ahead of time, because they aren’t available on the college web sites. (Like Princeton - what the heck?) This is not my first kid through the process, and I knew it wouldn’t be pretty, but this is beyond bad in my opinion.

Has anyone seen the print preview yet? I tested a full app but don’t see it yet.

I created a dummy account, entered dummy recommenders and fake gc using family emails, and finally got to the preview. You must have all green checks to get there.
