Could you please give me feedback regarding the Core? Is it a mandatory set of classes? How long does it take to complete?

Hey BU students,

Could you please give me feedback regarding the Core? Is it a mandatory set of classes? How long does it take to complete?

Thanks!

The core has 8 classes you’re required to take to complete the program and fully finish your CAS general requirements. They’re: 2 Core Natural Science courses, 2 Social Science, and 4 Humanities. The book list can seem long for both Social Science and Humanities.

Is the Core completely optional? Like for example, could I opt to take other classes that both pertain more to my prospective major and complete my general requirements?

Also, I have taken Spanish all throughout high school, and thus took my placement exam for BU. Nonetheless, I would like to try a completely new language for the 2 semester requirement. Is this encouraged?

*4 semester requirement, rather

It depends on how much time you have. Check to see how many classes you need to fill your major and see if you have enough time to take another language. But yes, the core is optional. However, courses in your major don’t count towards general requirements. Like, if you’re a Humanities major then humanities courses aren’t required for general requirements.

Would you be able to give an estimate of how many students choose not to do the Core? Also, seeing as you’re a Boston U student, are you doing the core yourself?

I can’t give you an estimate of how many were in Core, but I did finish Core for my requirements. I found it to be pretty easy.

Doesn’t the core vary by major? I think SMG and ENG students are exempt from taking language courses. I know ENG students are, since our core comprises of 1 SS, 1 Humanities, 1 in-depth(SS or Humanities), a General Elective, and of course the two writing courses.

Not that Core. The CAS Core. It’s not a major thing. It’s a program you can take to get out of CAS general requirements.
