The controversial new writing portion of the SAT is actually a better predictor of grades for freshmen college students than the older, more-established, critical reading and mathematics portions, according to preliminary results of two new studies.

Studies: SAT writing portion good predictor of grades - USATODAY.com

Is there significant validity to this? I sure am quick to accept it, as the writing was my highest section score ^_^

This was back in 2008, so I hope colleges have caught onto that by now, if the study is indeed accurate. However, I feel that colleges these days subordinate the Writing section, as many schools are CR+M while others average your CR & W, and yet they all claim that they’re looking for students who will do well academically at their school.

That certainly would insinuate that top schools have dismissed the validity of this study. Most colleges’ problem with the writing section seems to simply be the subjectivity involved in grading the essays.

Yeah it might be the best predictor if you’re an English major.
