The costs. How accurate are they?

On this website (Undergraduate Admissions), it has the estimated costs for the 07-08 academic school year.

Now here are my questions:

1) How accurate is the books and supplies cost? Do you guys find that you spend more or less than what is estimated? Also, approximately how much would you save if you just bought your books off of eBay? How much are the books? You can usually find most of the books for more than half off.

2) It states that the Room & Board cost is $11, 533. However, when I checked my financial aid on the website it said that the total living cost would be $12, 810. Well, which one is the accurate price?

3) What is meant by “personal expenses”? What does that include? How accurate is it?

4) Transportation–Why do you have to pay? I thought that Davis has a free bus system for its students?

Shouldn't worry too much about fees (I hear they are trying to get legislation done to reduce the fee increases) and room and board (You don't know if you are in a single/double/triple yet) for now.

Books and supplies....I spend about 200-300 dollars each quarter buying books/course materials (Including buying used books). I also guess it varies according to the courses you take and book requirements.

Transportation....It should be 0 if you don't have a car + have a bike already. To think of it, I guess it may include the costs of going home on wkends (not sure tho). I get rides home with friends so thats free =D.

Personal expenses is basically everything else that you would normally spend money on. Trust me, you are going to spend some money buying food outside the DC. That and some other..uh "expenses" that you will find out about your first few nights here.

edit: maybe you should have all your questions in one thread -_-

Thank you for your reply Bmbmasta.

I guess this will be my questions thread then. :)

1. I was looking at my financial aid and I saw that it stated $12, 810 for the basic living cost.

However, since I am choosing the Budget Saver meal plan, the Housing site (<a href="http://www.housing.ucdavis.edu/Halls/New/default.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.housing.ucdavis.edu/Halls/New/default.htm</a>) states that it will cost $11,022.93.

Does that mean that I will just pay the one with my meal plan? Or does the $12, 810 include another fee?

That would save me about $1800, so that would be great! lol

2. Is the $450 a RESERVATION fee or the first DEPOSIT? I'm confused because some people are saying that it's just to reserve a spot, but then some people have told me that it is the first deposit for housing. Could someone please clarify?

3. When does your financial aid come into play? For example, could you get your financial aid to cover the aforementioned $450 fee? I don't understand how the financial aid works. How does it really work?

4. Also, are we supposed to get an OFFICIAL financial aid letter from Davis? I have not received one yet, but I have heard that all colleges send you one.

5.

BabyBlue, no. They're residential programs; thus, to participate in the residential program, you have to reside where the program is...

Ah, great. So should I:

Join The Honors Challenge at segundo, the place I want to go to.

OR

Join the Health Society, and reside in a place where I don't want to go to (Cuarto)? The only reason I want to join the Health Society is because I think it will help me with my resume, and when I want to get internships...

So what should I do?

*Cuarto is toooooo far away from the campus basically.

Bump... :(

Man you have a lot of questions...
1) If you plan to choose that meal plan, then yes you will be paying $11,022.93 not the amount estimated by the financial aid office.
2) Its a early payment for your fall quarter housing costs to reserve a room.
3) You have to pay the 450 dollar thing on your own. Your financial aid doesn't come into play until they bill you for the first quarter. (should be ~1 month or so before classes start).
4) I don't recall if I got one..I remember berkeley sent me like 3 of them lol.
5) I have a question for you on this one: what kind of internships are you interested in? and what are your current future plans?

Well I want a career in the medical field, maybe a pediatrician, or I might change it to an optometrist. So I was wondering, if I joined the Health Society could it be a potential resume-booster, even though it is a housing program?

*What kind of housing do you have, and how do you like it?

2. Is there a cinema located ON campus? If so, how is it? Is it like an actual theatre, or do they play only a limited number of movies? How much is it discounted for students? I was excited to hear this news from one of my friends, but she said she wasn't 'sure' though.

The More Important Question (lol):

If you receive local scholarships, will those be deducted from your financial aid package? How do LOCAL scholarships affect your financial status, and your future EFC?

I don't think there is a cinema on campus. I believe the mondavi (sp?) center shows some independent films every now and then. There are 2 movie theaters that I know of that are within walking distance of campus.

The HS would be in the clubs and extracurricular activities in your app to medical schools. I guess it would show your interest in medicine. Medical related extracurriculars are not the only thing medical schools desire; they want well rounded intelligent people so join other clubs that also interest you. Although I don't know the specifics of the program, I wouldn't focus too much on trying to join it.

I live in a double in segundo with a regent friend. We decided that the extra courses that were required for ISHP were not worth it, so we decided to opt out of it and miller hall. My place is alright I guess. It can get pretty noisy sometimes lol.

What is "ISHP"?

If we don't get an official financial aid letter, then how are we notified about our financial status as the year progresses? When do I get to see my FINAL total; the total I have to pay for this upcoming year, since I got to choose my meal plan/housing?

You've got to learn to stop have answers spoon-fed to you. Solve your own problems, you don't see anyone else here asking all of these questions, they must be doing fine on their own.

I am not forcing ANYONE to answer my questions. I come to this forum to get an honest and fast answer from current students who go to Davis. Makes sense to me...<rather than="" e-mailing="" a="" davis="" representative="" and="" waiting="" weeks="" for="" reply="">.</rather>

Also, I think other future freshmen could benefit from this thread as well, just in case they might have been wondering about the same issue.

Okay, but you've asked 13 questions in this thread alone, plus about 5 other threads full of questions. I just don't understand how you could have have so many questions about everything.

Well it's better to be sure, than to second-guess yourself.

Like they say, if you don't know something...ask.

Okay so now the only question I have left is this one (I figured out the answers to the other questions, lol):
