The day of admission decision..

haha another weird dream I had just a few hours ago. You know how Cornell just confirmed that its ED results come out on the 11th. So I dreamed that Penn also sent us a message notifying the official decision date. And it's Dec 3rd!!! hahaha. I remember it saying something about it's having difficulty, so the results come out Dec. 3rd. I know it doesn't make sense to move the results to an even earlier date, but my dreams usually don't make much sense. Then I checked online. And SOMEHOW I saw my result in the format of a CollegeConfidential post. And it just said, "Not going to Penn" under my username, where it would say Penn 2013 for those we get in. I thought it's kind of funny.

Admissions is saying the 15th and I tend to agree because they are so behind with the new system, I think just making the deadline is going to be close. Hey has anyone heard how many apps they recieved? Most colleges have reported but haven't heard from Penn.

last yr there was a drop in the number of applicants...i don't know what to think about this yr.........anybody know?

i have a feeling it dropped. but dude, like it's nerve recking that it's taking them so much time to put everything up online -- the new system (scanning hundreds of papers) must not be as planned as one would wish.

whatever. gotta stay composed.

Probably close to last years number +1-5%

u mean it went UP? +++++ 1-5%? god i hope it drops, for some selfish reasons

Last year the number of apps went down slightly, as it had done te year before. No stats in yet, but due out soon. I'd bet they go down.

hopefully.

I'm just guessing. Admission usually gets harder every year.

yea that's true. but i checked on some website (pretty legit i think) and last yr's admissions rate actually went up a little...hey, even if it's just 1%, it's still good. but that was due to a drop in the number of apps they received.

considering the world population grows -- so till will the population of smarter, more talented children.

however, since there are only about a 1000 so admissions spots in top universities -- and it will stay that way -- the laws of nature convince one to believe that yes, indeed admissions will get more and more difficult with time.

I know for a fact that the admissions rate did go up down year (only school in the Ivy league to have their admissions rate decrease)...
but I also think that Ed apps increased this year (just a hunch)

OK, here's what I posted on the Penn ED thread

sources:
Early Decision applications decrease 1.5 percent - News
Lowest-ever early admit rate matched at 28 percent - News
Penn Admissions: Incoming Class Profile
Penn Alumni: Alumni Council on Admissions

3912 ED applicants
1147 accepted, 29.3% (note, the cited DP article reported 28% incorrectly)
1250 deferred, 32.0%
1515 rejected, 38.7% (my calculation)

of the 1250 deferred
130, or 10.4% of those deferred, were accepted during RD

46.9% of the 2012 class was accepted ED

SAT averages, presumably of those accepted ED (although the article did not specify)
CR 696
M 722
Wr 712

Legacies had it a bit better with a 41.7% ED acceptance rate.

ED application trends for past few years (fall of each year):
06 to 07: decrease of 1.8% (again, the cited DP article title is wrong)
05 to 06: decrease of 2.5%
04 to 05: increase of 21%

We are talking about 2 numbers here-
1. the change in the number of ED APPLICATIONS, year over year
2. the ACCEPTANCE RATE for ED applicants.

In my post on this thread above, I was talking about the number of ED applicants, not the acceptance rate. The number of ED applications to Penn has decreased the past two years, prior to this season. The number of ED applicants for this year has not been published yet. For the past several years, the Daily Pennsylvanian reports on ED and RD statistics through the admissions year. Based on prior years' repoprts, the anticipated DP article reporting ED application numbers is late.

On ED acceptance rates, last year it was 29.3%. Although I do not have the precise numbers in front of me (be my guest and search on "early decision" in DP to find the articles for the past few years), I recall that last year's rate ('12 ED) was about the same as the prior year ('11), which were both slightly higher than ED acceptance rate for '10 of ~28%. 28% was Penn's lowest ever.

So, appears that as ED applications drop a bit, the ED acceptance rate increases. Makes total sense assuming Penn admissions is trying to create the same size of accepted ED pools year to year.

If I had to pick whether ED applicant pool for this year was bigger or smaller than last year, I'd guess it was smaller, based solely upon the delay in reporting. I could be dead wrong. Of course they may be delayed in reporting not because they don't want "bad news" out, but perhaps the new computer system has stats compilation screwed up or the new dean wants to do things differently. Who knows. Either way, its not going to change the dice-throw possibilities of being admitted too much.

wish the 1st choice harvard/yale/pton/mit/etc. who apply to penn just to apply to more colleges would stop

then the true penn lovers would get in! i mean, most ppl are qualified.

wow thanks papa chicken. those stats were awesome

I think Penn ED apps will go up unfortunately...we'll see...

Yeah I agree about there being a lot more Penn ED applicants this year.
I'm kind of surprised that rejection rates are so high. I thought most people just got deferred? I didn't know it was about 1/3 chance for each :(

It also sucks that Wharton ED is probably (much?) lower than 30%
(sigh)

here you go: Penn ED apps drop 8%....& some good news for the Wharton gang....

Furda wrote in an e-mail that as a result of recent layoffs and the collapse of the financial service industry, fewer students applied to Wharton than in past years. Only 29 percent of the total early decision applications applied to the school .

Fifty-seven percent of early decision applicants applied to the College, 12 percent to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and two percent to the School of Nursing.

While, as usual, almost half of this year's applicants hail from the Mid-Atlantic, the number of applicants from California dropped from 332 last year to 292 this year.

This number is "soft" compared to last year's, Furda said, particularly since the University had increased recruiting efforts in the state this year. Despite the drop, he said Penn will continue its strong California recruitment efforts due to the size and demographics of the state.

In addition, he said next year's recruitment will have an increased focus on the Southeast United States, from Texas to Florida.

International applications remained relatively stable, with 602 applicants compared to 605 last year.

The gender distribution also stayed fairly even with 46 percent female applicants, up from 45 percent in last year's pool.

This year's total, however, does not include the 220 applicants who applied to the University through QuestBridge, a separate application program for low-income students with which the University partnered for the first time this year.

Thanks Papa Chicken, you are awesome!

Thanks, that's awesome news! But perhaps it gives me a confidence boost I don't want...I was just getting used to the fact that rejection is just as likely as acceptance (well, statistically speaking more likely...).
But hey, if they want to increase their focus next year on the Southeast (florida, my state of residence), that gives me a hook, right? ;)
