This has really been bothering me a lot...

I've read time and time again that there are opportunities to indulge in some stereotypically collegiate parties at the University of Chicago...

But are these alcohol-induced fun fests a fiction? I'd really like to experience the "true" college life AND get a top-notch education...

Does anyone else share in my frustration? Or is Chicago not the place for me?

I'm of the "work hard, play harder" ilk and sincerely hope that Chicago has more than one "real" party a month (or year, as some joke).

Despite the fact I'm a nerdy type, I do enjoy a busy social life and friends--I'm hoping that it won't be too difficult to find like-minded people at Chicago...but if not, then I'll work my ass off and hope for a transfer.

The dogma "work hard, play hard" is blueprinted into my genome.

If push comes to shove, There are other universities nearby (coughs...NW) that will be glad to have us, or so I would like to think.

UChicago, like any other top tier school, demands hard work. At the same time, fun should not disappear. From what I have heard and read, UChicago had made considerable improvements in regards to the all important FUN arena. They introduced sports again, created friendly competition between house and when I visited UChicago, many of the students were enjoying the one in a million 70 degree weather and playing baseball, and all sorts of stuff...which really boosted my appreciation for UChicago.

In regard to the partys, They won't be that bad. Read the blogs from the current students at Chicago. They put many of my questions to rest.

Those of us here who want to experience (or create) "collegiate parties" (cough) booze (cough) at UChicago ought to stay in contact if we get accepted.

I join the party. I also plan to go to City of Chicago at least once a week. Never shall I be confounded to my room or the library more than I am required to.

I go to the University that lives "the life of the mind". Often, I refer to myself, since I am tying my 4 years of life to the University, as a "chicago nerd". To tell you the truth, I often enjoy the stereotype and laugh at it.

UChicago will have one hell of gang when they take us in, be it "chicago nerds" or "cool maroons".

My friend who is a freshman at U of C says she met only two kinds of people: people who would party every night and people who would study every night. I'm kinda in the middle: I enjoy working and studying something, but I like to have a little fun, too. Hmm..we'll have to see when we get there...

see, to me, being "nerdy" doesn't mean you can't get drunk. what it DOES mean is you can have conversations about higher philosophy and metaphysics WHILE drunk, something i find extremely fun and intellectually stimulating :)
