All right, I don't know if the following is something everybody wanted to ask but thought it was super dumb and brushed it aside or whatever but... I'll do the embarassing work and ask for you anyway (I hope I don't regret this).

K, so, does being good looking help you get into college? I mean, dude, you do interviews and stuff right? What I mean is, if two applicants have the same chance but after the interview one is very good looking and the other is not even average looking (their personalities are both the same in preferability if there's such word), what happens?

I swear there has to be a factor in your looks in admissions that require interviews no matter how dumb and stupid it sounds. It's part of your first impression right? And people DO react different....

All right, I did the dirty work of asking. Anybody got any comments? Or is this thread gonna die with no replies? Either way I'm fine.

Hahaha this has got to be the most amusing thread I’ve read on CC all day. :P

In response to your question, psychological studies have shown that people tend to act more favorably towards good-looking people. So, assuming that both applicants have exactly the same qualities/character/EC’s (which is highly unlikely - in fact, impossible), they’ll be more inclined to admit the good-looking person. However, remember that the assumption you just made here is in no way true, and that they will be looking for an applicants’ personal qualities more than anything else.

On the other hand, if the good-looking applicant had poor hygiene and the not-so-good-looking one kept himself/herself clean, then they’d be more willing to admit the latter, for the simple reason that it’s all about personal qualities…

I doubt it. Only because you said if everything else was equal.

Normally I would have said yes being good looking would help you get into college, if only because good looking people tend to be more popular and “naturally” liked, so more chances for elected leadership positions, teachers perhaps grading a little easier (subconsciously)…

But “All Things Being Equal” - I would favor the not naturally good looking student because if they were elected to the same offices and received the same grades, I would think there must be something special with this kid. They didn’t relay on “good looks” so what talents and skills do they bring to the table.

You underestimate the admissions committees. They can tell which applicants are beautiful without even looking at them. The College Board and ACT Inc can also figure this out and make sure the beautiful people’s tests are scored more favorably.

I think up to a point it can help create a favorable impression with an interviewer. However, VERY attractive people have trouble being taken seriously. People often assume they are dumb airheads. Fashion models who are intelligent have to constantly battle this stereotype. Being regarded as a dumb airhead is not your advantage in college admissions.

But even if you are attractive but not too attractive, in the long run I don’t think it helps all that much. For the simple reason that interviews aren’t weighted all that heavily in the process.

What if you show up to an interview for top college and you got the grades and scores and good ECs and you’re VERY attractive? Hopefully they won’t screw people over because of that. But then we all know that the ratio of VERY attractive people at top colleges to state colleges is VERY small, so I wonder how they would react. In other words, if you’re VERY attractive and the campus lacks VERY attractive people and your scores and ECs and grades, etc. are in their range do evaluate you as “okay, this guy/girl is diversity material” or “wait, I was supposed to take his/her appearance into account? Yeah, sure, that’s very funny.”

Lol who added “social anxiety” as a tag? Come on, this thread is just for curiosity not social problems.

yeah this thought actually crossed my mind because on columbia’s app you can upload a photo of yourself if you want. they say its something about “being able to recognize you” if they’ve met you earlier on campus or something, but i was wondering how else a photo could affect your app. i also thought it was maybe a way to tell what race you are

“You underestimate the admissions committees. They can tell which applicants are beautiful without even looking at them. The College Board and ACT Inc can also figure this out and make sure the beautiful people’s tests are scored more favorably.”

HAHAHA! The Collegeboard and its ways of figuring out who you are… is this why they ask you so many personal/special questions?

HAHA ooomg melin720 you asked what I was wondering about too thanks so much.

Okay so what do think. I had to send my passport and VISA pic and okay i look so bad in it and i was scared that they were gonna have a bad impression of me becuase i thought i looked bad

I mean for Columbia they let me upload a pic so I mean i guess its fine for that. but seriously haha

I mean it kinda does make sense lol i mean theyre obviously not gonna write good things about you if you were good looking but had a sucky interview. It could help though if your a girl and have a guy interviewer or something haha

You sit on a throne of lies! Beauty is the quintessential element to anything worthy of success! Beauty over bronze! Beauty of brains! Divinity IS BEAUTY!

This is a very interesting question. I personally sometimes wonder why colleges don’t require that you send in a photo of yourself with your application… don’t they want to see the faces of the students that they are considering for admission? Hahaha I guess it’s insignificant but I’d be curious to see actual applicant faces amidst all their paperwork and such.
