The essay

Will the essay topics always be different? or will it be a very broad, similar topic? And if the essay topics are similar, could one just use the same essay for like several different scholarships?

Since different scholarships are awarded for different purposes, essay topics are usually different. They can range from "You have demonstrated that you are a person who is committed to achieving very high standards. Who or what inspires you?" (Executive Women International Scholarship) to "Briefly describe a situation in which you felt that you or others were treated unfairly or were not given an opportunity you felt you deserved. Why do you think this happened? How did you respond? Did the situation improve as a result of your response?" (1 of 8 essay questions for the Gates Millennium Scholarship). Most of the time, however, the essay questions have similar focuses (who are you? why do you need this scholarship? etc.). If you find scholarships that ask the same questions, definitely use the same essay from different scholarships that asked the same questions! That's one of the keys to winning lots of scholarships is knowing how to manage your time by reusing essays and making copies of your submitted applications so you have a template to work with. Of course, you'll want to morph your essay a bit so that it does indeed answer the question (most important part). Overall though, since the different scholarship organizations aren't going to talk to one another about applicants' essays, how would they know you used the same essay? For many of my scholarships, I used essays from my previous scholarships and college applications. If you do that, you'll save lots of time and energy so you can apply for even more scholarships. Good luck!
