the food at cornell?

protein bars are the best. im not an athlete im just kind of psycho about my weight and i basically eat an egg white omelette for breakfast (they had an omelette making guy over the summer so im assuming they have it during the year too), a protein bar for lunch (i love promax), and a piece of grilled chicken for dinner with lots of spinach and green veggies tossed in throughout the day. over the summer i got grilled chicken at the hamburger station for dinner every day, which is a decent source of lean protein. they didnt serve tofu very often so i just kept it in my fridge.

What are the meal plans like? I'm a big eater and since reading this, I'm concerned I'm going to have to spend a lot of money at other more expensive restaurants. Or then again, I could just eat some ham sandwiches my entire college career.

Itsthemendy16, I selected House Golden which seemed to be the most generous in terms of meals, etc.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but just to clarify: Big Red Bucks are used only on-campus, and CityBucks can be used throughout Collegetown Ithaca at select dining venues, right?

And about CityBucks... how much should I put in (or am I better off just using cash/credit card?)

BRBs are for campus use....City Bucks are used off-campus. I started off with $100 in City Bucks and it got me through the semester...but I didn't leave campus a lot.

CB1278, thanks for answering my question. But do they have those protein bars at lunch as a part of the meal plan, or did you purchase them separately from another store?

The meal plans are all you can eat while you are in the dining hall.

protein bars: you have to buy them separately

and remember, brbs can ONLY be used for food! it sounds annoying at first, but then during the year you realize why

Does Cornell have Sun Chips?

I can't understand how they have these two elderly Chinese cooks in Appel and have such non-authentic Chinese food. I bet they never ever used sichuan pepper in their lives. Gahh.

What's the food situation like in Noyes? Is it just Jansen's Market, or is there more than that? (I keep thinking there's something like a mini food court or something...)

I dont know if there is anywhere around ithaca to buy power bars since i was only there for the summer but its usually easiest to order the online from drugstore.com
we are also very lucky that the only tasti dlite in upstate new york is in collegetown. woohoo fake ice cream!

I agree... the Chinese food is not what I would expect at all.

what's good chinese food?

remember that these cooks are cooking for a crowd of 500+ each night...

haha, good luck gaining weight at cornell. the walk to classes will pretty much take care of exercise. but the food is really pretty great--I wouldn't ask for much more out of a college dining facility. (my favorites are anywhere with 5 star sub--nasties, ivy room, big red barn, etc)

Ahh food at Cornell. Well, for freshman it's mainly the dining halls for you (it's good for the social atmosphere). RPCC and Appel. The first few weeks or months you may have a preference (RPCC for me) but after a while you realize there really is no difference except for Sunday brunch. Risley Hall is the hidden gem of North Campus dining I feel (maybe because it's right below me and I don't have to brave the harsh winds when I want dinner during the winter).

In terms of BRB places, Moosewood is goooold. It's a great vegetarian place that even non-vegetarians love. The vegan cakes there are soooooo scrumptious I actually prefer them to regular cake. Also the BLTease tastes so much like bacon (which I love and miss ever since I stopped eating meat). Trillium is average boring stuff but necessary when you're in a rush. The Ivy Room is mostly garbage but if you get them to make a custom calzone for you in the pizza place it is actually really really good.

Also, CTB is good if you're in the Schwartz/collegetown area a lot :P

Actually, the two Chinese cooks do cook amazing authentic Chinese food. Auntie Jean is originally from HK. It's just that they only cook a few plates of the authentic versions when they see some Chinese/HK people they recognise though (that's why I get spoilt). But they explained that they've had to adapt the recipes to western tastes for the benefit of the masses. Which is sad, but judging by the long queues most students still like it a lot.

BLTease...heaven on earth.

I even asked them for the recipe because I was so sad that I wouldn't be eating it during the summer. Temple of Zeus makes a good BLTease too, but with smoked gouda instead of smoked provolone.

And yes, Auntie Jean cooks amazing cantonese food, but only for people who ask for it. Most of what's put out is Americanized for the crowd.
