How bad is the food and the dorms there?

I'm choosing between Berkeley and Cornell, and one of the most convincing factors supporting Cornell is its delicious food and its better housing. I've heard horror stories about Cal's housing and dining, and I wanted to know exactly how bad it is.

Is it like the high school cafeteria? Why is it so bad? Etc.

housing is not that bad, but the dorm food is not necessarily good. Non-dorm food in Berkeley is rather good. Most people don’t eat dorm food after they get an apartment

^But doesn’t that cost more money? I imagine dorm food is included in the fees you pay, so you would essentially be wasting away that money you spend for food for that year.

The meal plan isn’t all encompassing, and you can purchase other things with your points. (E.g. I, as a badminton player, sometimes purchase shuttlecocks at the RSF with my meal points). Berkeley is rather famous for its off-campus cuisine; there are a plethora of good restaurants where you can grab relatively cheap, heartening meals.

How are the co-ed bathrooms?

Berkeley’s restaurants are amazing. I always had a problem with cafeteria food…x__x;;

You won’t notice in about 2 days. (This may be TMI) generally there are 2 standing stalls and 3 sitting stalls. Really, its just like at home (I assume you share a bathroom with your parents and/or any siblings you may have?) They’re cleaned everyday, btw.

So the standing stalls aren’t open, right. Like I won’t walk in and see a guy ****ing?

No, they aren’t open.

Also consider that dorms at Cornell BETTER be nicer as you spend long swaths of time huddling indoors during the winter, where at Cal you spend more time outdoors and moving around the campus.

^Thank goodness. That would be so awkward, haha.

You don’t notice it at all after the first day or two. Parents visit and don’t freak out when using the bathrooms, ergo pretty tame experience.

can you spend meal points at the rsf little store?

Haha. I asked my friend about it and he was like, “is that all you’re worried about… the co-ed bathrooms? that’s the least of your worries.”

@Batman17: Yes.

noice. i never knew that. meal points away!

Co-ed bathrooms make things awkward for me at times. You see, the bathroom is a very private and reflective place for a guy like me. Sometimes I may just sit there a wee bit longer thinking about life. It’s so relaxing and all the stress just drains away. Figuratively speaking of course. But seriously, it is.

^
lol. go at 3am no one’s there.

trust me. with all honesty, that’s when i go. i stay up till 230 am and then sit there till 3 sometimes.

Batman17: That’s so going to be me next year, haha.

me you unit 2. we’ll ponder our brains out together someday next year. preferably with one empty stall between us.

haha. deal.
