wisdomsomehow gave great, detailed info on USC for her 1st/2nd semesters last year, but I figured I’d share my schedule for next semester since our program in the USC School of Dramatic Arts is so flexibile/personalized! (Also, I can’t believe I am registered for second semester already, time FLIES in college!!)

Friday: I am planning this day to be my relaxation/miscellaneous work day!
Morning - work (most likely a theatre internship I hoping to secure here in LA!!)
Theory and Practice of World Theatre (discussion section) - 1:00 - 1:50pm
Private Vocal Lesson - my time slot is TBA.
Afternoon - Workout, stretch, rehearse for dance, vocal lessons, and my Musical Theatre Audition course
Evening - Student films, seeing shows around/off campus, SLEEP!

On top of this, I am usually running around LA several evenings shooting grad student films with the AMAZING film students at School of Cinematic Arts and other film companies in LA. Also, I will be crewing a School of Dramatic Arts show this semester and auditioning for the countless SDA shows and Student Productions put up every semester (and hopefully getting cast in one or more, which will take up my evenings for sure!) Can’t wait for spring semester, if anyone has questions about theatre/film at USC or my schedule, ask away! =)

I love this thread!
It is so helpful to me as I have a son trying to decide which MT course to apply for. If we could just get some information about AMDA, UofM, CCM…

Bump - maybe parents can encourage their students to post while they are home on break?

I’m home for winter break and wanted to let everyone know I absolutely LOVE RCS! I moved to Glasgow the last week of September and freshers week started October 1st. There are 17 MT majors in my year, mostly from the United Kingdom, and there is one other American besides me. We are all different types. We have become extremely close over the past few months both in class and socially. The MT freshers take turns hosting a weekly dinner and movie night in halls, and we go to shows, concerts and clubs together. A few students live nearby and we have traveled to their homes for sleepovers. We are like a family and everyone is very supportive of each other.

The staff at RCS is absolutely incredible. Andrew Panton is the head of our department and is well connected in the industry. He works with Susan Boyle and on BBC Television shows such as “Tonight’s The Night”. Andrew is amazing to work with and brings out the best in each of us. The conservatoire also has creative teams that are assigned to students as needed. All teachers have had extensive training in everything they teach. We are treated as professionals and expected to conduct ourselves with the same regard.

My Schedule:

Monday:
8 - 9:30 Body Conditioning; 10 - 12 Choir; 12 - 1 Program Meeting; 2 - 6 Intro to Collaborative Practice

Tuesday:
8:30 - 10 Ballet; 10 - 11:30 Independent Study; 2 - 4 Voice/Dialect; 4 - 5:30 Floor Barre; 7 - 9 Artist In Development (the business end of the industry)

Wednesday:
9 - 11 Contemporary Dance; 11 - 1 Acting; 2 - 3 Acting (1st Year MT’s); 3 - 6 Performance Class

Thursday:
9 - 11 Music Theory; 11 - 1 Singing and Instrumental Lessons; 2 - 6 Voice/Dialect

Friday:
9 - 11 Jazz; 11 - 1 Acting; 2 - 4 Critical & Contextual Studies; 5 - 8 Keyboarding (one hour time slots rotate)

7 - 9 weekdays and sometimes on Saturdays we have rehearsals for various shows

We have gotten several great opportunities so far. In early November we performed two songs for a televised charity event (BBC) called, “Children In Need”. RCS took us by bus to the BBC studio in Aberdeen for filming. Our performance was broadcast the next night throughout the U.K. Simon Beck (London West End Musical Director) was hired as the Musical Director for our December variety show, “Swingin’ Into Christmas”, and he will also be the MD for one of our spring shows, “Carousel”. First year MT’s had the chance to audition for the ensemble in that musical. They selected 3 girls and 4 guys and I was extremely lucky to be cast. This spring our class will also get to be on set with the 2nd year MT’s who will be working with the BBC filming their own script/movie.

I love living in Glasgow, and there are many fun things to do and see when we are not busy at the conservatoire. It’s easy to get around by walking, cab, bus, subway (clockwork orange) or train. Guy Fawkes Night & going to the St. Enoch Christmas Market are two of my favorites so far. I have visited Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Troon, and Liverpool (sister studies there) and may go to Spain with classmates for spring break. I do get a little homesick sometimes, but I FaceTime my friends and family, so that helps & having a sister in the U.K. is also a plus.

I am soooo glad I was accepted to RCS and am honored to be with so many amazingly talented people. Every day is inspiring. It feels like I have learned volumes in such a short time. The decision to attend RCS was the best decision I have made so far in my life and I am confident I will gain the skills necessary to have a career in MT.

What a helpful thread! I’m bumping it up so all can see!

Very cool! This might also be of some help to you looking for similar things- [The MT Project » The School Experience](http://www.themtproject.org/?page_id=133)

(to the powers that be, I am NOT trying to promote anything, just trying to be helpful.)

^^ Very interesting website MTCoach! There are only a few schools listed so far, but it looks like it is building. I hope that happens in the next week. ;-)

Ha! It is building! I’ve got a LOT of students that have committed to helping, and as soon as they get the form back to me (as the basically are all using the same format since it covers so much), I will post them! Hopefully it will help you :)

Any designers/techs who are willing to chime in here for a day in the life at NYU, Pace, UNCSA, CMU, and DePaul would be wonderful. Techs anywhere for that matter!

Any posts on freshman experience for Emerson?

Hey dointhework, do you have an Emerson kid too?

Honestly, she got off a wait list and is making her decision tonight. Very difficult decision for her since she likes many aspects of both programs and both cities. She knows there are major differences in curriculum especially in the first 2 years. She wants the conservatory training but really values interesting and engaging academics as well. There are many compelling attributes to both institutions. She is a risk taker but Emerson’s cut policy is a little hard to swallow. It would be a shame if after all her hard work she never got to experience conservatory training. Although at CCPA, if for some reason, she wanted more academics or changed her mind about a complete conservatory experience would she still be happy at Roosevelt University?
I think seeing what a typical week looked like at Emerson would be be helpful.

@dointhework Best of luck to her in making her decision. It seems more difficult to decide between 2 programs that are very different. They love aspects of both and feel they are tuly giving up something good by having to choose. The Emerson threads have some information, but I’m sure you’ve looked at that. Both schools have great locations! I guess the choice comes down to how many non-theatre classes she would like to take.

Yep, you summed that up nicely. Also, just found out Emerson’s acceptance numbers are high, so that should be factored in.
In the end, It has to be her decision and I have to be happy and supportive about whichever program she chooses. It has been difficult to keep my own “stuff” out of it.
This whole process( from the very beginning) has been quite an adventure and very nerve racking. CC is a world all of it’s own and I do find it helpful since I wouldn’t dare keep burdening my friends with all the DRAMA! Thanks for reaching out.

Hi everyone! I just finished my Freshman year at Montclair and absolutely loved it! I was encouraged to share my classes and experience on here so here it goes. I hope this helps someone looking at possibly attending the school!

MONDAY:
8:30am-ENGLISH: This was the one GenEd that all Freshman MTs were required to take. Not too terrible of a class, but waking up almost everyday of the week at that time definitely got to some, including myself!

10am-AURAL SKILLS: During this class we work on sight-singing techniques and really learn how to take a piece of music and learn it as quickly as possible which is really helpful for auditions. David Dabbon is awesome!

11:30am-MUSIC THEORY: The first semester of music theory is a lot of written tests which can be pretty difficult for a lot of people. The second semester is more hands on and concentrated on learning how to read lead sheets pretty efficiently. Most people had no piano experience going into that and all improved exponentially. PAT BURNS!!

1pm-PERFORMANCE PRACTICUM: Combined grade levels and all voice majors (MT, Classical) get up and perform at least once a semester and are critiqued by classmates and the teacher. (Usually a help in preparation for voice juries.)

2:30pm- FRESHMAN STUDIO: (First Semester) In this class we worked with the amazing Greg Dlugos and basically worked on ensemble rep which ranged from Lady Gaga to Into the Woods. It was basically like a mini glee club and it was a lot of fun. We got to perform at some pretty cool events for the school!

3pm- OPERA REHEARSAL: (Second Semester) As an MT I was able to audition for the opera and got cast in it! It was a pretty cool experience and exposed me to something completely different than musicals.

5:30pm- ACTING FOR THE SINGER: This class is the entire Freshman MT class (20 of us) and we all got the chance to perform 3 different pieces for the teacher. Jan Prokop was great and she helped me add so much more to a lot of my audition songs that I had before. In this class we also had to write a character analysis/background, summary of the musical, and also an examination of the music playing in the background. It is amazing the things that you simply just discover about your character after just listening to the music playing behind you. Great class! Got a lot out of it

7pm- NINE: I was cast in one of the three musicals this year at school and had rehearsal basically every night. Most freshman were cast in at least one musical this year which was great and an amazing opportunity. One girl even was cast as Kate in The Wild Party!! At Montclair all of the shows are based on talent and not seniority.

ps…Monday’s were the most tiring that’s for sure!!!

TUESDAY:
Tuesday’s tended to be a lot more laid back than our Monday’s.

8:30am- Ballet: I was in Ballet 1, but many Freshman took higher level ballet classes which was a great option for those who are more experienced in dance. I have never been great at Ballet, but learned a lot during the class. We had written tests which really forced me to learn vocabulary and made it stick. We attended a dance performance which we had to write a paper on and also watched an amazing version of the Nutcracker which we also analyzed. Near the end of the semester we attended an upper level ballet class of all Dance majors and got to observe which was really cool.

1pm- ACTING: This class was great and really helped a lot of us to come out of our shells and be more confident. (A lot of us looked at Acting as our weakest point). We worked on a lot of Improv first semester, and I believe one monologue. Second semester we covered two different scenes, and prepped a monologue for Acting juries.

3pm- VOCAL TECHNIQUE: In this class every student got to get up and perform a piece of their choosing for our teacher which followed with a brief critique. Also during this class, Lori McCann who is a phenomenal opera singer, taught us some really useful vocal technique and I learned a lot of new things about my voice that I never even knew existed. It was a really useful class and I got a lot out of it. The technique and vocal health knowledge was great.

6pm- NINE rehearsal

WEDNESDAY:

8:30am: ENGLISH

10am: MUSIC THEORY

11:30am: AURAL SKILLS

2:30pm: TAP- With three levels and an upcoming addition of a fourth, no student is ever felt unchallenged in a dance class. All of the teachers are outstanding for all dance classes. On and off Broadway, mentored by Bob Fosse…Our teachers definitely have the experience.

5:30pm: OPERA rehearsal

7pm: NINE rehearsal

THURSDAY:

8:30am: Ballet

1pm: Acting

6pm: NINE rehearsal

FRIDAY:

1pm: FRESHMAN STUDIO

2:30pm: JAZZ

6pm: NINE rehearsal

And amidst everyone’s busy schedule, we found time to come up with a Freshman Showcase. First semester, we put on Carousel. Mid-semester, NINE. Second semester, The Wild Party. All were outstanding! I hope this helped those of you considering the school! Thanks for reading :)

Thank you, SO MUCH, Savannah!!! I watched the you tube of freshman showcase and you were AWESOME!!!
