Productions that are run through Atlantic Stage (the professional equity theatre in partnership with CCU) typically rehearse on an equity schedule of Tuesday-Sunday with Mondays off. They typically have fewer weeks to open a show.</p>

<p>Friday:
8 - 12 - Shop hours (stagecraft homework 40hrs or practical )
1:00-1:50 - Common Hour</p>
<p>2 weeks prior to spring break us freshman began to hold “freshman showcase” meetings for an hour during our lunch break since most of us had the same classes together it was easy to meet at the same time. There we basically discussed how we wanted to do our show theme, songs, scene, group numbers, rehearsal times, performance days, space etc… we than settled on a rehearsal time and decided that we were going to rehearse 2 week before our performance which would be April 16 and we rehearsed 8 - 10 Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday. in addition many of my classmates participated and preformed in the directing 2 scene which were the Upperclassmen juniors and senior directing 2 class final. Basically the class was full of directors who cast the plays “the blue room”/ “hello again” rehearsal for was normally from 5:30 -8 varying on everyone schedule</p>
<p>Hope this was helpful! I decided to keep it short and sweet and just write the classes that i took just so it wouldn’t be to much to read. most of the class titles are self explanatory , but if any one has any question about any of the courses and their class descriptions feel free to PM me or reply here.</p>
<p>bumping this for the Class of 2018</p>
<p>All of us need to VOW that we’ll post Freshman Experience updates once the school year starts. These are very helpful.</p>
<p>Memories! The updated postings list.</p>

<p>Hello! I have a question regarding my major and my interests for the future. I am in Steinhardt for Early Childhood Education. In the future, I would like to become a pediatrician. Would it be better for me to transfer to CAS or should I stay in Steinhardt? Thank you in advance. Also, what is the workload like as a student in Steinhardt?</p>
<p>KatieSuh-this forum is dedicated to musical theatre, you would have better luck posting this elsewhere</p>
<p>Refreshing this in case austimom’s older thread is of interest to those finalizing school lists, or this year’s freshmen want to add current info to this list. </p>

Heyy, I’m super late, but I hope someone answers In which MT undergraduate programs can you take more dance classes than shown (Carnegie Mellon, NYU, BoCo I’m most curious about, but all are welcome and wanted!)? I am currently taking 8-9 hours of dance a week, and I hoped to maintain this amount of training, if not receiving more, during college. Thankss!!
I cannot speak for other programs, but if you want that much dance, you may want to consider Oklahoma City University’s Dance Performance major. You get voice and acting in addition to it being one of the top dance schools in the country. They have many, many alums successfully employed on Broadway, in regional theaters, cruise ships, etc…
@lgallybroadway, my daughter danced many many hours a week in high school, was in a high school career center dance program for 4 years and, like you, wanted to continue to be challenged. She ended up choosing Montclair which has a fabulous dance program with many levels and the ability to take every kind of dance all 4 years at your appropriate level. But I will say you can’t go wrong at BoCo, which my daughter almost chose because she had worked with Michelle Chasse (BoCo MT dance teacher) elsewhere and LOVED her.
@lgllybroadway, at Ithaca they dance 10 hours a week in classes, and if they are in a show (a musical or a dance show), that goes up to 25-27 hours per week. Also, Ithaca offers an extra pointe class for those who do pointe, which added another hour onto that. In their senior year, it goes up even more b/c they have an extra MT dance class. I assumed (perhaps naively) that ALL the MT programs were 10+ hours/week. So if you’re looking for 8-9 hours/week, I am not sure where you wouldn’t get that (maybe in the non-NSB studios at NYU?).
I know BW has Ballet Bootcamp every morning at 7 or 8 a.m. I think they have to go once a week, but some go every day. And this is on top of their dance classes. @kategrizz would know better than me. But BoCo is definitely known for their dance, and everyone adores Michelle. Pace also has a lot of dance classes and a commercial dance major, but I’m not sure the number of hours the MT kids dance.
@monkey13… wow. 10 hours a week of dance classes at Ithaca? No kidding.
I on the other hand didn’t realize there was such a thing as an MT program that was known to be acting first program that had 10 hours a week of dance instruction. NSB, which is the MT studio at NYU Tisch doesn’t come anywhere near those hours and they have more dance than any other Tisch studio. It’s more like 3 hours in NSB.
I thought Ithaca was an acting first program so your report of 10 hours as being normal sort of surprises me. Last year I started a thread asking about what made some people describe their program as a “conservatory” or “conservatory-like” and some of us posted actual hours spent in class and specifically in professional training classes. I know that my number was 19 1/2 total hours for an MT at Tisch at the time with some number of more hours in non-studio classes. Others contributed. This was the thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/theater-drama-majors/1550827-studio-training-contiuum-conservatory-not-and-everything-in-between-p1.html
Anyway, 10 training hours spent in dance training at Tisch even in the MT studio would mean that over half of the training, in an acting focused program would be in dance. You sure about those 10 hours of class time spent in dance classes at Ithaca? That really would surprise me.
Anyway back to the OP. Dance classes in some programs are leveled and in others, not. If you are serious about dance, look for program that levels their instruction. Dance is leveled at NYU Tisch. If you want to take additional dance classes it would be a function of your ability to fit them around required studio classes plus your other classes. And it would also be limited by your credits. A full load of credits at NYU is 18/semester. After that you would have to pay more and it is a very expensive school. Studio is 8 of those 18. Usually there is another 8 credits at least in theatre studies and other classes. So you normally only have 2 credits left to play around with. But in a city like NYC, you certainly can find other ways to get more dance hours in including drop in classes etc. Much of that would be less expensive than NYU tuition.
It is interesting to read that dance is 10 hrs/wk at Ithaca. Back when my D applied there, dance was a lot less. But apparently things have changed in that program over the years. I am a little surprised that dance is just 3 hrs/wk at Tisch/NSB. I wish I still had the schedule when my D was in Tisch/CAP21, but I feel pretty certain dance was at least 6 hours per week. And yes, like halflokum writes, dance is leveled at Tisch.
Well I’m not exactly sure how to add up the hours and I don’t want to exaggerate. I just pulled up the details. There are classes like “Scene into Song into Dance”. And yeah… they dance there. Capoeria is part dance, part music and part martial arts. Does that count too? Acrobatics? Is that dance? But if you only count classes with the words, “ballet”, “jazz”, “tap”, “modern”… 4 - 5 hours is fair. 3 was probably under representative. But 10. No.
I texted my daughter to make sure before I posted the number. The 10 hours is just ballet, jazz, and modern. That doesn’t include Voice and Movement…just straight dance classes. When they are seniors they add tap and MT dance. Yes, Ithaca has upped their dance game (and now require a dance prescreen). They are acting first, no doubt. But they put on a dance show every two years for the MTs and Acting majors (and dance minors), and one of their musicals every year is typically dance heavy. Last year it was How to Succeed, this year it’s A Chorus Line. But Ithaca is a conservatory. It’s at a LAC, but it’s a conservatory. My D had only one gen ed her first 2 years (a required English seminar). This year, they instituted a new program where the kids have to take more gen eds. But when my D graduates, I think she will have taken a total of 4 gen ed classes. She’s taking 2 this semester…she gets none next semester in London (it’s all voice, stage combat, Shakespeare, theatre history and that type of thing); then senior year she has to take one more on top of all her MT classes. The MTs are really considered a double major in Voice and Theatre with a minor in dance. There is no room for anything else. The MT kids are finding it almost impossible to take the new required gen eds b/c of their schedule. A ton of them are taking “Insects and People” b/ it’s the only class they could fit in. The MT kids are not happy with the requirement, and we are pretty sure it will be abolished…unfortunately, my D’s class are the guinea pigs and they have to live with it for now. But until they instituted this new requirement, I think she would have graduated with only 2 gen ed classes her entire 4 years. Very, very different from NYU as far as # of gen eds required.
I don’t know if this is at all related but several years ago, there was a boy from Ithaca who was on one of those reality shows to cast a Broadway musical, I think it may have been Grease. There was a lot of talk at the time about his lack of dance skills, and relatedly, the training at Ithaca. Perhaps that was the impetus to develop a more intense dance training curriculum?
@monkey13 I am a firm believer in deferring to those with boots on the ground who know their own program. It surprised me mainly because of my understanding of Ithaca’s program from back when my daughter applied in 2012. It certainly seemed like an acting focused program then anyway because otherwise it would not have made my daughter’s list. I also recall that dance classes were not leveled but that has probably changed too.
I think anyone trying to get a handle on Ithaca’s dance component in their MT program could still be confused about the amount of dance however even today so it’s good that you are mentioning it. The program’s website says “over 20 hours a week spent in training” this is across the board. And there are only 18 dance credits required for graduation in comparison to 33 - 34 for acting, voice, movement and another 33 for music classes. So I would never have concluded given the credit distribution that roughly 1/2 of the “over 20” training hours each week would be for dance. Hence, my surprise.
