The Global Youth Summit of the Future of Medicine

So I just got an invitation to this Summit and I haven’t applied yet. Luckily it is being held in Boston this year and I don’t live much far from there so the transportation cost is not a problem. However, once you’re accepted, you have to pay about $3000. Is this summit really worth it? Will it really make a difference in my College application? There are some shady programs that have sent me e-mails and letters telling me that I was chose to represent my school, emphasizing how great my records were but I soon found out that they sent that to almost everybody in school in hopes that at least someone would pay the $3000 and register. Is this a similar trick? Have I really been chosen? I can’t afford $3000 and if I really shoot for it I want it to be worth it. Any info on this would be much appreciated including maybe some past participants of this program. Thanks in advance for any help!

I think that it is definitely worth it . I had to work a ton over the summer to afford if but it was one of the best weeks of my life. I know this is kinda late or if you are still applying, but while I was there I met so many amazing people and made a ton of friends. We went to lots of interesting speakers on a wide variety of medical topics and did many interactive activities. If you have any specific questions let me know!

Dear bandit4030, could you tell me more about your experience at the Summit last year? What you liked about it, anything you didn’t like? Thanks

@alibalibi first thing that I loved were the people. I got to meet tons of people from all over the United States, and everyone was super nice and welcoming, and I made a ton of new friends. Second, I loved going to all of the seminars. Everyday we went to a bunch of seminars from speakers from almost every medical field I could think of. Some everyone went to, some you got to pick and choose yourself. There were so many amazing speakers and I learned a ton. I also loved the visits we did. Over the course of the week, we visited hospitals, med schools, and we also went to a cadaver lab. In addition to all these things, we did a group research project and got to watch several surgeries. In addition to all the medical stuff, we got to visit boston and go on tours (super fun), go shopping, visit Harvard, go to the science museum, go swimming, and lots of other activities. Overall an amazing week.

@bandit4030, thanks, really helpful. How were the dorms? Did you stay on campus? How were the evenings spent?

@alibalibi the dorms were just fine. Some people got bigger ones than others but they all had the same bed/desk/wardrobe /standard dorm furniture. (So yeah on campus) and we did so,e activities in the dorms, the main meeting area/building was a two minute walk from the dorms and the cafeteria a little ,ore than that. We were all over campus throughout the week (theater, pool, library, etc). In the evenings… Well were were pretty much doing stuff all day. Towards the end of the day though we would usually meet in our groups (summit divided everyone into groups of 10ish, each with a faculty mentor) and talk about the day, and then we’d go to the closing speaker, and them they’d usually give is a snack. Them we had dorm time for a short while, (showers , so,e people brought guitars and stuff) and them everyone had to be in their rooms by 11

Did anyone attend the Summit last year? My daughter has been accepted and I would like to get some feedback from previous attendees to see if this worth while?

@concernmom22‌ Hi! I attended the Summit last year and absolutely loved it. I remember my parents bring a little unsure too, but for me personally it was definitely worth it. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

@bandit4030 I would love to know more about your experience there, I know at this point by looking at other discussions about this summit that it is not very selective and that it is not very helpful on college applications but I would love to know how useful the experience was. Did it help you to see what being a doctor was really like? Did you actually see any operations or do any research projects? Did you get a scholarship? and if you did, how much? Thank you so much!
