The Good, Bad and Ugly: Lessons Learned

MA is one of the last states to open vaccines to 16+ and frankly it is not hard to get appointments right now so I don’t think “young people aren’t a priority” is going to be a deterrent to schools for doing what’s best for the community.

You are confusing two things. Yes, there is a supreme court ruling regarding vaccines. No, in MA, there is no law for the flu SHOT.

I am not sure what you think I am confusing?? I am aware that the mandate for Flu shots was walked back - I even stated that. My point is that law around vaccines strongly favors mandates as constitutional and if the Flu mandate had stayed in effect I doubt the anti vaxer parents would have won in court.

I hear what you are saying YOU think the supreme court mandate for vaccines applies to the flu shot, I don’t.

The flu shot is most assuredly a vaccine. Just because we call it a SHOT doesn’t mean it’s not a vaccine. Now I am confused because that is just not accurate.

“An influenza (flu) shot is a flu vaccine given with a needle, usually in the arm. Seasonal flu shots protect against the three or four influenza viruses that research suggests may be most common during the upcoming season”

My 16 year old has had the first dose. Personally, I hope it is mandated at her boarding school. The quicker we have most of the population vaccinated the quicker we can return to some sense of “normal”. One of my kiddos at age 4 had a seizure less than 24 hours after getting the flu Vaccine. Guess what? He got the flu vaccine the following year and every year since. He had severe asthma, and had pneumonia the year before. The benefits outweighed the risks (and I believed the doctors when they said the vaccine may have caused his fever, but it was how fast it spiked that caused the seizure- it never happened again- he will also be first in line when it opens to under 16.)

I’m filling out online healthcare forms for kiddo right now for BS in the fall and there is already space for recording which covid vaccine they’ve had and the dates. I should note that at the moment, it is listed under the “recommended” section and not the “required” section.
I do wonder that if Covid vaccines are required by schools, what happens to the international students who have had the shots but not the versions approved in the US, like SinoVac in China, or CoviVac in Russia. Will they have to have it again?!!

I’m 48 hours into my Moderna vaccine journey. My kid will be in line if they offer it to younger kids this summer prior to starting BS. A close relative was rushed to ER from college campus with difficulties breathing from covid. Age 19, athlete, no underlying health conditions. They were in the ER for 10 days. And although back on campus now, still not completely recovered from issues.

Since the schools are working with local clinics to get all their current students vaccinated (who are old enough), I would guess they will have thought of international students who might have difficulty and probably arrange for a local provider to give the vaccine. If they are fairly available now, I expect the vaccine will be easily obtained in August/September.

The benefits far outweigh the risks. Just my opinion.

I am in Canada, and wonder too how schools will deal with kids vaccinated from countries with non-approved vaccines from Health Canada or FDA. I also wonder how 'legit" the vaccine records might be from some countries.

Usually I am someone who doesn’t mind if a topic meanders, but discussing the scientific merits of a vaccination campaign seems way off topic in a thread about prep school admissions.

Agreed… “cast a wide net… your A+, high ISEE/SSAT scoring great EC kid is a dime a dozen” should be everyone’s tag line!

The most disillusioning point is some kids with less than stellar grades make it ahead of those with the A+ who do community service and play sports etc…

I’m not going to read all 259 posts of this thread, but several posts regarding Covid have been flagged, and they are off topic. Any further posts about covid, unless directly related to prep school and lessons learned, will be removed. Thanks for your cooperation.

This is exactly how we started with DS, but found the forum a bit too late…that approach with this forum honed our search/application skills and I felt we did a much better job with DD.

I’m trying to see things with a “silver lining” and “meant to be” mentality. DS being WL at his hyper competitive schools has allowed us to broaden our list and look at amazing schools that weren’t originally on our radar. He’s interviewing now and we are very optimistic that he will have choices for this fall.
