I do not know what it takes to get merit money at Michigan. My son applied to the MT program, and the demand for the program itself is so great that the director said that there is very little merit money for that particular program. It would really depend on the program and demand for students in that program. Out of state funds are really scarce is what I have been told. I am familiar with the Midwest Student Exchange Program (google it), and my knowledge of it excludes U of Michigan from that group. I believe Wayne State and a couple of smaller schools are the only colleges from Michigan but I am not a midwesterner, so I don't know for sure. Missouri and Minnesota have most of their schools listed, but Michigan is not fully committed; they don't have to, I guess.

ACK!! Back to the brown bag....breathe in, breathe out....~b.

Back in the day, I believe that students attending Big 10 universities could do a semester at any other Big 10 university or the UChicago. I did not know of any student who took advantage of this however.

I used to know students that did this exchange. But now that I am on the east coast, I don't hear much about this at all. It used to be that if you are in one of the states that participate in the Midwest Student Exchange Program, you could go to any of the schools that were in that program for 1 and a half the tuition of your state school. I know kids who did this for UMinnesota and UMissouri-Columbia, who came from other states. But Michigan's two giants do not participate in this program as far as I know, but things could have changed. Kinda unfair that Michigan's students are allowed to go to those other states' flagships schools at discount prices, and Michigan only throws in a few schools, excluding their two best state schools, don't know why the other states permit this.

Berurah, check the info out before using the brown bag. Gonna need it to bag the lunches anyways. LOL But, seriously, my info may be dated, particularly since your son's GC seems to think that UMich has some deal with Kansas. This is pretty specific info, that you will have to check with the school in order to get the right info. I am sure your son will be getting some other acceptances soon, and hopefully, the new will be good with the aid and scholarship packages.

If you peruse the postings for today, there are a number of threads regarding financial aid. The Yalies are very unhappy with their packages, and someone is asking about Michigan money as well. You are certainly not alone in this college situation.

originaloog,

This is, I think, a sort of reciprocal tuition reduction thing. The GC told my son that his being from the midwest would make his out-of-state tuition at Michigan less than it would be for other out-of-staters, but I haven't been able to verify this.

jami,

Thanks! I plan on doing some research tonight and asking the GC tomorrow a.m.!

I hope your S's nose is healing nicely! Should make for some conversation tomorrow. :) Tell him to relax. My S's interviews were very low-key.

marite,

His interview is not until Monday. Tomorrow he gets off the splint that's on his nose! He is pretty excited about that since he has a debate tournament all weekend! He still has two black eyes though...lol Thanks for the well wishes! ~berurah

Ah, berurah. I was once hit by a car and fell down. Nothing dire happened but I had a bump on my head and two black eyes. My H claimed I looked like a raccoon. :(

marite,

Ouch!! How scary...being hit by a car!! We did take chocoholic's advice and get a pic. with the broken nose and the acceptance letter. In fact, he donned his 7-year-old brother's Spiderman boxing gloves, put his hood up over his head and held up the Michigan letter. He looked like quite the prize fighter!

BTW, did you get my pm from earlier?? I had a quick question for you...

~berurah

Berurah, lol with the brown bags. I have gone through a few these past few weeks. I have heard from numerous others that UM is not generous with merit money for oos students. We are just supposed to be honored and flabbergasted that we even made it in.
As far as the MSEP, I found this link, and it does not list UM or MSU:(

I hope they want your S and my D so bad though.....that they offer some $

chocoholic,

Amen! ~berurah (did you see my post to marite above about the picture? :) )

My nephew who was from out of state received a full ride to Michigan. He chose to go elsewhere. His sister who also was from out of state was offered $60,000 (for all 4 years). She too chose to go elsewhere, but there are merit scholarships which go to non Michigan residents.

michmom,

Do you have any idea about his stats or what may have made your nephew stand out like that? My son is a very strong applicant for Michigan, I think, so I am still harboring hope.....crosses fingers!!!!!! ~berurah

Yes Berurah, after I posted I did see the note about the pic. With the black eyes and all, it should be a 'hit' in the 'scrap' book

berurah:

I've not seen your PM. Can you resend it?

Nephew was number one in his class. He had very strong music ECs on a state level and some unusual community service. He was flown out for a weekend and interviewed at the school. I think they only give a small number of full rides. Niece on the other hand got her notice either with her acceptance or shortly afterwards. She was told a lot of the scholarship decisions would be based on the strength of the essays. HOpe this helps. I could check with their mom for additional info if you would like.

Last year, S was told that he'd been nominated for a possible full tuition Scholarship (Telluride program, I think) but it came with a lot of strings (special housing away from other freshmen, mandatory programs, etc). I don't think he'd have pursued it (may well have not gotten it if he had). He was also offered the 60,000 mentioned above. This all happened after his ED accentance, so was a moot point. The latter scholarship, from LSA, is given to about fifty OOS students, if I remember right, but they offer more because they know some will turn it down.

michmom,

That helps quite a bit. Thanks!

garland,

Thanks for the info.!

Berurah,
I've been off these boards for awhile but wanted to add my late congratulations to you and your son! Glad to hear that his nose is healing already ... As Rosanne Rosanna-Danna often said, "It's always something!"
