The Grandparent Thread

Holding that little bundle of joy is heaven on earth. So glad they only live a mile away.

She was trying to breastfeed, but he wasn’t getting enough to eat. He was not sleeping well and crying a lot. She switched to formula and he’s perfect now. Weighed 8 lb 10 oz at birth, was 8 lb 1 oz when they came home Saturday and was down to 7 lb 14 oz when they checked him today. I am glad she recognized he was not getting enough.

What are your children choosing in place of the Fisher-Price Rock N Play? My middle daughter is expecting her first baby next month and asked me to do a little research on portable baby sleepers, since she’s swamped at work. They have a crib for the baby that won’t fit in their bedroom. Since they’re going to follow the AAP recommendation that babies sleep in their parent’s room for the first year, they’re looking for a bassinet for the first 3 months and something for a bigger baby after that. They have the Graco Pack and Play for the first floor and may just get a second one for the upstairs. Wondering if anyone here can recommend something?

My oldest daughter swore by the Rock N Play for my first two grandsons (now 3 and 1.5) - she called it her second MVP item after the boppy nursing pillow. They did sleep well in it - really sobering to realize that it wasn’t as safe as we thought, even though my d followed the weight guidelines and always had the baby strapped in.

My grandson slept in a Halo bassinette next to their bed, but outgrew it by 6 months - then he went into a crib in his room (mere feet away).

My GS also slept in a Halo bassinet, but they moved him into his crib at about 4 months. His room abuts theirs and he just did not sleep well in their room. He was also getting too long for the bassinet. While they used it (and it’s now in my basement waiting to be used again!) they liked it. The base is very substantial and the mesh sides allowed them to see him at all times.

His favorite place to sleep not in his bassinet was on the Boppy pillow (not the nursing pillow). There are warnings not to let the baby sleep in that too, but since it’s not enclosed, he was always next to someone being watched when he was sleeping on it.

Thank you, @mominva and @runnersmom. I’ll pass the brand name on to my daughter. I like how easy the Halo seems to make it for a mom recovering from childbirth to reach the baby at night.

We had a portacrib similar to this one. It was loaned to us and when we were done, I was able to return it to my friend. The one we had had latches you could use to drop the side to lift baby in and put. It was used until baby started standing.

Wow, cool to see all these grandparents.

My GD has spent the first four months in a FinnBin. https://www.finnbin.com/

DIL is due in a little over 5 weeks. We are having a coed baby shower on Saturday. Aiming for more of a party and less of a shower. Easter weekend isn’t a great time to do it, but my other son will be home for the weekend and we want him to attend.

D splurged and bought a SNOO. It cost almost as much as my first car. ? GS was not a good sleeper. We are hoping GD will be better. This should help. GD will be here in about three weeks. We can’t wait to meet her!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions about Rock N Play substitutes. D and her husband have ordered the Halo bassinet with the bells and whistles, including a vibrating option. My other grandsons settled in comfortably when the white noise and vibrating options were on in the Rock N Play, so this little guy may like that in the Halo.

@hrh19 - wow, those SNOOs are pricey, but they look great. Please let us know how your granddaughter likes it.

Sorry – what’s a SNOO?

Spiffy bassinet. It looks like it limits the baby’s ability to move, which would not have worked for my kids, but it gets some great reviews.

Just spent the weekend with S, DIL and my adorable 17 month old GD. She’s quite verbal for her age (speaking in phrases/short sentences, quickly learning new words), but is also entering the terrible 2’s (“no”, going limp when you try to pick her up to do something, moody). I think DIL sometimes indulges her too much, but it’s not my place to say anything about that. She’s still alot of fun and I can’t wait to see her again, probably this summer.

DD is 19 weeks today; 21 weeks and counting! I scored some great garage sale finds, and am on the lookout for a “mini crib” for them. A mini crib is smaller than a regular crib, but functions the same, and can fit in a smaller area. I wonder if a SNOO just moves the problem down the line? If your baby gets used to being moved around all the time during sleep, he or she will have problems sleeping when moved to a still crib.

Got the text: Nanny will be taking a week off in August, would I like to fly out to fill the gap? You betcha!

D had a borrowed snoo. It is now on it’s 4th infant all borrowed from her GF.
The outfit the baby wears reminds me of a straight jacket. Basically the whole concept is a super fancy papoose board bed that vibrates to the movement of the baby. The more the baby cries and has upset movements the faster it goes. They had to reassure me that he could not be brain damaged. This is all observed on the baby monitor.
He did transition at 5 months to a crib with a few stressful days. There is another outfit he wears now that is heavy but does allow his arms to move. Sort of like the new blankets adults are buying to help with stress.

They swear by it. You can only understand if you watch a utube as it is otherwise incomprehensible to grandparents.
I still wonder about learning to self soothe but G’son is one of the most content babies I have ever seen.

@mominva, I would jump at that chance too if I could! My son and DIL have a wedding this summer in Colorado and wanted to take a few extra days. My son asked if we would be willing to fly out and keep the baby and share an Airbnb with them. I so wish I could, but it is two weeks before my daughters due date and I promised her I would come help her after the baby was born. If she were to deliver early and my son was depending on us, that would create a problem. Plus, as it is, I will have to use FMLA when I go stay with my daughter.

I hate that both my kids live flying distance from us, especially with grandchildren, but we make it work.

Since Mother’s Day is coming up, will you all give a gift to the new mothers in your life? I know my son (I will remind him) will buy his wife something from him and the baby, but I don’t know if I should buy her a gift or a card or nothing, since she is not MY mother. I vaguely remember my MIL giving me a sweet card once, but only once.

I typically make donations to a local women and children’s shelter for Mother’s Day and Habitat for Humanity for Father’s Day. This year I will add DD and SIL to my respective list of recipients.
