The Great Gatsby

I assume most people here have read this book. I haven't, surprisingly, so a week ago I decided to start reading it. Everyone raves about how great this book is, and it's one of those great American classics, so I really wanted to love it when I read it. However, I've read three chapters, which is about 1/3 of the book, and I'm not really liking it so far. The writing is a bit awkward at times, and the story is kind of boring so far. Should I just keep reading? Why do you like the Great Gatsby? I really want to like this book. :)

Oh yeah the beginning of the book is a real snore. But once you get to the middle it gets really good. It’s now one of my favorite books. Since I don’t want to divulge any spoilers, you’ll just have to keep reading. :)

You should most certainly keep reading. Chapter 3 is when the important events begin to occur; everything before that is essentially exposition.

To be honest, I thought that the plot was a bit mundane, and didn’t particularly care for Nick at all, but I loved the hopelessly innocent character of Gatsby and the novel’s themes.

(Never try to make judgments on a work of literature after having read only a portion of it. Someone who read half of Death of a Salesman and criticized its thematic messages would be missing the point entirely.)

I love Nick! He is the greatest! Gatsby seemed like such a smooth guy at first then my view of him got slowly warped. Keep on reading!

^ Haha, we are essentially opposites. I love Gatsby because he’s in love with something he can’t have – just like me. (The girl I love lives across the US - I’m in MA, she’s in CA.) Nick’s an epic narrator, but his character doesn’t cut it for me. Certainly, I’m not denying Gatsby’s negative points, but I for one must sympathize with him.

A soap-opera from the point of a “moralist” that over extends its 130 or so pages. Goes absolutely no where and nothing seeminly meaningful happens.

/thread

Forget about school

this is an important book about life

if you arent reading it and pondering what it means to you, then you are only the poorer

This is, as of now, my favorite book. (Though it changes).

I read it before I had to read it in school, so that was nice.

Don’t judge a book after THREE chapters. Just finish it, and see what you think.

I don’t find any part of it to be boring.

here’s the moral: rich people are dicks

But it was an okay story, not my favorite, didn’t really see it applying to my life or anything that people said I’d get out of it. I always have to finish books once I start them so I’d continue on. It’s not terrible, just keep in mind that rich people are though.

^That is not the moral.

^^ Agreed completely with ChocolateBanana. That is SO not the moral. If you think that’s the moral, read it again.

this is a VERY important book

when you are older, hopefully you will grow up a bit and realize it

^Scratch that second statement, it is SOOOOOOOOOOO condescending.

^ yeah well chocolate bananas are nasty

what you dont know is that

when you are in high school, YOU DONT KNOW SHTTTTTT

it sounds mean, but really, really

Guys. Seriously? How old are we again? Whatever happened to agreeing to disagree?

Absolutely loved the book!! Keep on reading… You’ll like it.
I didn’t like it at the beginning but after I forced myself to read through the first half of the book I could not put it down.
